Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
This interesting nonfiction book shows in words, pictures and lifted flaps the rapid development of growth in knowledge, wealth and comfort for those humans lucky enough to be born after the discovery of printing press in the 15th century, heralding the beginning of a more rapid exchange of information. The first page entitled "How inventions are invented," suggests that most inventions are the result of improving on other inventions or adding to them, and very rarely are they "totally new-the result of a brainwave." Progress is presented in different areas: development of steam and engine power to move and lift things; electricity to provide light and power; wires to carry sound, and the ability to capture wireless sound. One page is dedicated to "fighting disease" offering an impressive growth of medical skills. The nineteenth century brought atoms, splitting them, and the resulting huge jump in power production. The last two pages touch on glasses, photography, and motion pictures. The book ends with "crazy contraptions" which includes a rocking chair fan, a hat radio, and a horse-drawn boat powered by a hapless horse wearing what appears to be rubber wings on its legs as it swims through the water pulling a small boat.
