Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
This is a very special book for anyone who loves boats and is interested in the history of man's growth and the development of this technology. There are only 14 pages presented as 7 double-page spreads, which are quite heavy as each page is triple thick to allow for the illustrations on each side of every page to have multiple flaps that can be lifted for viewing what is inside the more than 30 boats which are pictured. The author and illustrator have imagined that the first person to float on water did so hanging onto a log and paddling with his hands. A raft and oars probably followed next, and then rafts with sails rigged to catch the wind. The book goes on to say, "The first real ships we know about...were built in Ancient Egypt around 5000 years ago." This boat is depicted with one giant sail and a large oar in the back for steering. The next pages illustrate warships with multiple rows of oarsmen pulling in time to a piper's horn, but it was sailing ships that prevailed for many centuries, until the invention of steam power in the 1850's. The turning point comes with a remarkable steam and sail ship called the Great Eastern with steam driving propellers on both sides and six tall masts with multiple sails running the length of the ship. Next you can examine two enormous ocean liners designed primarily for passengers. A large three-page spread near the end of the book illustrates a huge aircraft carrier with hanger space for 100 planes! A submarine and a destroyer accompany this ship. But it's being able to peep inside all these wonderful boats that makes this book so special. I recommend it without reservation. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
