If the author of See it and Say it in Spanish seems familiar to you, it may be that you¿re familiar with Margaret Madrigal¿s other classic, Madrigal¿s Magic Key to Spanish, which, for my money, is in the top two Spanish learning tools along with the more recent Learning Spanish Like Crazy.

Don¿t let the fact that See it and Say it in Spanish was published in 1961 deter you. The word-picture method that she employs is an incredibly effective pedagogical technique that builds associations that cement retention and recall. Every word and concept in See it and Say it in Spanish is accompanied by one of these associative visuals. You have to try it to really understand how well it works.

Madrigal also makes heavy use of Latin roots in order to connect Spanish words to their English counterparts. This enables students to synthesize concepts across different languages and see the interconnectedness between them. Once you start seeing the logic behind the structure, it makes learning any language easier. Sadly, this technique is not commonly used in today¿s classrooms. This is a shame.

See it and Say it in Spanish is best suited for beginners. Kids especially like the visual approach of this product. If you¿re looking to get a young one started, look here first.

This was one of the first books I bought to try and improve my Spanish. This book is excellent in that on every page there are illustrations and pictures that go along with the vocabulary. An additional list of the vocabulary with the English translation is included on every page as well. However, the only minor thing I didn't like about the book was the absence of the you informal (tu), so it doesn't really help if you want to say things to your family or friends. But other than that it's a fantastic book for the money.

This book was given to me by my mexican mother when I was 12 years old and it helped me to learn spanish when my mom was busy learning and practicing her english. I am now 22 years old and still own the book. It is very useful. It may be old, but the spanish hasn't changed. Great because of the visualization of what you are saying!

I have been learning Spanish using the Pimsleur Spanish courses, levels I, II, and III. The Pimsleur courses are excellent, but they do not teach grammar, per se. The Pimsleur method alone might work well for some students, but I find that sometimes I need to know WHY you say one thing in one way and say something else in another way. The See It and Say It in Spanish book has helped me a little because it provides the conjugations of some common verbs and explains a few things such as the subjunctive. Here is the MAJOR shortcoming of this book: The book ignores the familiar form of the language, which just happens to be the way that most people speak Spanish most of the time. In other words, the book will teach you how to say 'Are you going?' to someone you don't know, but generally does not teach you how to say such things to friends and family. At a price of only about six bucks, the book is useful and worth buying.

I've been looking for a book to teach myself Spanish, and I'm so glad I found this one. It is very simple and doesn't overcomplicate or throw too much at you. I highly recommend it if you are looking for something quick and easy for the basics of Spanish.
