If you're looking for mainstream, radio played all day long pop, perhaps this isn't for you but if you want the sounds of a true musical genius at work... get it, listen thoroughly and listen often. I feel it's got overtones of Tusk (ala Fleetwood Mac) as well as some of his quirky earlier solo efforts, but also the refinement and "tug on your heart strings" of Under The Skin and Gift of Screws, both of which were delightful. The fact that except for one song, the entire album is done with nothing but guitars and yet has so many varied and ecclectic sounds coming from it is at once amazing and at once, if you know Lindsey, completely him. At times, I wish he'd let his own, un-manipulated voice come through a bit more, but that's nothing new. He loves to voice-manip and you just have to take that with him. End of Time is at once endearing because of the melody and his beautiful sounding, clear voice, and yet also sad and heart-breaking because of the matter-of-fact lyrics. Other songs make you raise your eyebrows trying to figure out exactly what he was going for with them, but give you the desire to find out as well, while others make you want to get up and dance. Seeing him tour this album in NYC and Durham later this month will be an experience I cannot wait to have. I feel, unfortunately, that Lindsey will continue to be underrated as he just doesn't sound like everyone else out there... But maybe deep down, that's what gives his music the intimacy that I crave as if he's standing in front of me, giving a private concert at my own house just for me and a few of my closest friends. So maybe it's not such a bad thing after all. Who wants to be like everyone else anyway?
