Overview

Wonderland finally seems as if it's getting back to normal. Queen Alyss is back on the throne, and reunited with her childhood sweetheart, Dodge. But the fight for Wonderland is far from over. King Arch, in nearby Boarderland, is conniving to overthrow everything for which Alyss and her friends have fought so hard. Even worse, King Arch has found an ally in the recently returned Redd, who has been biding her time and gathering new and evil assassins in the Catacombs of Paris. With enemies circling and danger looming, someone close to Alyss lets her down—and threatens the future of Wonderland forever.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This second book of “The Looking Glass Wars” deals with the early struggles of Alyss and her throne. Great tensions run in Wonderland as the lands recover from the dark days of Her Imperial Viciousness Redd. The young, new queen lives under the careful watch of many, especially the new royal bodyguard, Homburg Molly. Queen Alyss must face all the usual political intrigue and dangers as well as the unexpected return of the evil Redd and her chief assassin, The Cat. Welcome to the realm of public domain! Alice and many other classic characters are up for grabs. This is not always a bad thing, but what promises to be an edgy and modern re-imagining of Wonderland turns out to be a garbled case of bad fantasy fiction. This is a book that can definitely be skipped, for many, many reasons. First, the story suffers at the hands of a writer obsessed with the “visualization” of the action sequences in the novel. This is a good example of writing for the sake of making a movie. Second, the prolonged descriptions of weaponry bring the story to a screeching halt and do little or nothing to enrich the quality of the story. In other words, if you are looking for a strong piece of fantasy fiction, overlook this title. If you are interested in watching the birth of a well-thought out franchise, then this is for you. If you are simply curious or a hard-core fan of fantasy fiction, the looking glass awaits. Reviewer: Monserrat Urena
From The Critics
In this follow-up to The Looking Glass Wars (Dial, 2006/VOYA October 2006), Alyss Heart reigns over Wonderland after seizing the throne back from her traitorous Aunt Redd, who has escaped to Earth to regroup. Alyss struggles with her feelings for Dodge, her childhood friend who seems to believe himself too lowly for the Queen, while Hatter Madigan, the elite fighting Milliner, learns something astonishing about his past. Meanwhile seemingly random attacks in outlying areas of Wonderland signify that Redd might still pose a threat. As with the first book, this sequel is all style and little substance. The villains are a joke: Redd insists that her minions call her "Your Viciousness," and the King of the misogynistic Boarderland carves his dictates, such as "Boarderland men do not cry when watching sentimental crystal-vision programs with their wives," into his kingdom's cliff-faces. Even if this parody can be considered successful, other elements are difficult to take seriously, such as when Alyss interprets her personal bodyguard's prolonged absence as sulking instead of realizing that something is wrong. There is no hint of a resolution, making the book entirely incapable of standing on its own, but libraries should be prepared to stock it because its marketing and production values will likely yield a significant demand. As a side note, an Alyss Heart picture book for younger readers is slated for fall 2007 publication, thus expanding this flashy but thin series even further.

    Great book

A great follow up to the first one. Many trilogies run out of steam in the second and third books, not these! I can't wait to read the next one!

A great book for any fan of fictions or fantasies.

Seeing Redd, the second book in The Looking Glass Wars, is a very good book to read for any fan of fictions or fantasies. In this installment of the series, Alyss Heart has recently become the queen of Wonderland, after her aunt Redd and The Cat have jumped into the Heart Crystal. Everything is going moderately well, things slowly working their way back to normal. Or, as normal as they can be after the terrible reign of Her Imperial Viciousness (Redd Heart). As the prologue is supposedly the introduction of the story, you will notice that it's also a peak at what is to come in the story, that Redd Heart and her skilled assassin, The Cat, are painted (quite literally, but also by accident) by a painter in France. After some odd number of chapters, Homburg Molly has been captured by King Arch after being knocked unconscious by a peculiar weapon inside of a chest that was to be taken to Queen Alyss (contents of which you'll later find out in the story). Also, Redd herself has amassed a large group of ex-Wonderlanders and Earth mercenaries in order to try reclaiming Wonderland for herself. I apologize, but I believe that I've said enough about the book already. This is a great sequel to Beddor's "The Looking Glass Wars", and he is continuing to impress me with the amazing story of Wonderland. (Hint: the third book is turning out just as good as I thought it'd be, and it has an odd twist where I am currently reading.)

    literally seeing red

the evil villaness vinds herself literally seeingred as she beomes oh so angry about her exile. Redd, the villaness, tries yet again to take over Wonderland. this book is full of twists andturnslike he first ofthe series, though it focuses more on the life of Redd and not as much about Alyss.

    Boring

This book was terribly boring. The first book unbelievably exciting and thrilling and I could not wait to buy the rest of the series. But I started reading Seeing Redd and I couldn't stand it. It was boring and had no meaning. They were many parts where there were unneeded details and it made it hard to read. I would not recommend this book to anyone. The story line was horrible and the characters were overplayed.

    Even Better Than The First

The first book in the Looking Glass Wars was good...got you in touch with a lot of the primary characters and set things in motion, and I rather liked it...but the second book here, Seeing Redd, was even better I thought. You become more in tuned to the characters, and it introduces yet more characters, good and evil. There was also more excitement and action added into this book, and it ended with quite a bang. There were even a couple of interesting plot twists added into this book, though one part was pretty sad. All in all though, I felt this story was entertaining most of the way through, and I look forward to seeing how it all concludes in the 3rd book, Arch Enemy. If you like fantasy and/or liked Alice in Wonderland and want a fresh perspective on a reimagining of it, you should read this series. The series has been a fun read thus far. Check it out!

Good book, but not what I was expecting.

The first in the Looking Glass series (The Looking Glass Wars) was a great, completely brand new way to look at the story of Alice in Wonderland. The sequel, Seeing Redd, wasn't so much...

Though the book was very good, it got a little boring at times, and in some parts was very easy to read. I had the plot of it figured out halfway through the book. But, that being said, things still surprised me in the end, and the book ended with you wanting more.

    I Also Recommend:

    Seeing Red Almost

By the end of the book I wanted to see Red not only displaced but suffer the most imaginative death possible. Not sure if this book was sophomore blues or what, but not as enjoyable as the first book. The characters I had fallen in love with in the first book became a little sappy in love ruining the chase, intrigue and battles in the book. Totally understand the intended audience probably would eat this part of the story line up, but I feel it could have been done with a better balance. Regardless I look forward to getting the final book in the trilogy and finishing what has been started. With any luck there will not be too perfect of a bow at the end of the final book. Recommendation based on final books out come..TBD

A bit of a let down.

I read the first in the series, The Looking Glass Wars and really enjoyed it. So much in fact that as soon as I finished reading it I hopped online and ordered the second. While it was interesting to see the story evolve through another novel, I felt this one lacked something that the first had. It also got a bit to far fetched at times. And while I realize that it is a fantasy, I think the plot should have events that happen for a reason, not just to try to shock you. Not sure if I'll read the third. I'll definitely be waiting for paperback.

My 12 year old son loved this book.

He rarely asks me to buy him a book. After I read the first book in this series, "The Looking Glass Wars", I gave it to him to read. I figured he'd like it and he did. So much that he begged me to buy him the sequel. He read both books cover to cover in one sitting.
