Library Journal
Sixty German-born artists, mobilized under the Symbolist banner for this exhibition--shown this year in Frankfurt, Birmingham, Stockholm, and the UK--are represented here by a knowledgeable selection of 195 paintings, sculptures, prints, and book designs. While there is ample room for curatorial quibbling over Jugendstil, Art Nouveau, and pre-expressionist tendencies, the catalog's dozen first-rate essays, predominantly by German scholars, range from period overviews to thematic studies of individual artists. Heavier paper and more color reproductions, surprisingly lacking for the frontispiece and essay openings, would have upgraded the work, whose primary research importance is the light it casts on lesser artists and on the formative periods of leading artists. Sections on German sculpture and book design of the period are noteworthy. Recommended for academic and museum libraries.--Russell T. Clement, Northwestern Univ. Lib., Evanston, IL Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

Kingdom of the Soul adds up to a powerful if heterogenous account of fin de siecle artistic culture in Germany. It introduces a wide selection of variants on certain fundamental themes; it visits the poles of passion and mirbidity of euphoria and despair.
