The second novel in the Virals trilogy from #1 bestselling author and inspiration for the TV series Bones - Kathy Reichs!

Ever since Tory Brennan and her friends rescued Cooper, a kidnapped wolf pup with a rare strain of canine parvovirus, they've turned from regular kids into a crime-solving pack! That is, unless the Virals can figure out a way to save it!

So when Tory learns of an old Charleston legend about a famous she-pirate, Anne Bonney, whose fortune was never found, she can't believe her luck - buried treasure is exactly what she needs to save the Institute on Loggerhead! Trouble is, she and her friends aren't the only ones looking for it. And this time, the Virals' special powers may not be enough to dig them out of trouble . . .

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cara Chancellor
Tory Brennan has science in her blood. Literally. She and her three best friends—Ben, Hiram and Shelton—grew up in the shadow of their scientist parents, who all work together at an isolated primate research center. Tory also boasts a familial connection to Temperance "Bones" Brennan, a famous forensic anthropologist. But it was exposure of a different kind that changed Tory's life. Last year, one of her father's colleagues unwittingly infected the four friends with a mutated canine virus that allows them to manifest canine sight, strength, speed, hearing and smell...along with glowing yellow eyes. Tory thought their biggest worry would be keeping their powers secret, but that was before the center closed from lack of funding. Now, the clock is ticking to when the gang will be separated. Their only hope is to save the center by finding the legendary treasure of pirate Anne Bonny. Can their canine senses uncover a buried fortune? Or will the attempt lead to their discovery? Reichs—the author behind the television series Bones—channels a young Temperance Brennan in Tory: she is smart, loyal, a natural leader and unknowingly attractive. Still, fans of Bones may be put off by Tory's methodology, which relies on super powers and hunches instead of the scientific method. Even so, engaging characters, a rapid-fire plot and a creative resolution make this a guiltless, enjoyable read. Reviewer: Cara Chancellor
Kirkus Reviews
Tory Brennan, 14, and her friends are still trying to determine exactly what happened to them following the events of the series opener (Virals, 2010). The teens have been exposed to an experimental virus that altered their DNA, giving them characteristics comparable to wolves, enhancing their natural senses and creating a human pack. Hardly has this novel started when her father, Kit, drops a bomb. Due to the economy, funding has been pulled on his research project, necessitating a change of job and a move away from South Carolina and her pack mates--but not before she debuts into Charleston society, at her father's girlfriend's insistence. Determined to stay together, Tory, Ben, Hi and Shelton band together to search for the long-lost treasure of America's most famous female pirate, Anne Bonny. It's not long before things go awry, and they learn that they aren't the only ones on the hunt. They're going to need all their abilities just to survive. Dodging bullets, slipping out after curfew, following obscure clues into underground tunnels, not to mention Cotillion duties and snarky classmates, are just part of the adventure. Will this be their last? Reichs taps into the angst of teens, fear of separation and the uncertainty of today's economy and wraps it all in an entertaining yarn of history, pirates and modern technology. These characters are keepers. (Thriller. 12 & up)

Gr 6–10—This sequel easily lives up to the promise of Virals (Penguin, 2010). When exposure to an experimental parvovirus led to enhanced senses and strengths, Tory and her friends were both frightened and exhilarated by their newfound abilities. As this novel opens, their powers seem to have stabilized and their lives have returned to relative normalcy. But financial woes threaten the closure of Loggerhead Island Research Institute where most of their families work. As their parents begin making plans to move elsewhere in search of employment, the four teens realize that they may be separated for good. When they stumble across a lead to the long-lost treasure of pirate Anne Bonny, they devise a daring plan to save the foundation and stay together intact. With its meld of science, intrigue, high-tech sleuthing, treasure hunting, and daring midnight adventures, this novel is hard to put down. The complete cluelessness of the adults may annoy some older readers but teens will be amused and pleased to know that what they've always suspected is, in fact, true.—Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

If you've read the 1st book in this series, Virals, you must read this thrilling sequel. It takes you back into the lives of the Virals, a group of teenagers who have a unique DNA that gives them canine abilities. In this novel Tory and the gang discover that the island research center where their parents work together is scheduled to be closed. This will split up their pack, and most importantly leave them alone to deal with their powers. Tory soon finds a way to save LIRI. Find Anne Bonny's buried treasure. What entails is a mess of dangerous decpetion, undersea caves, tunnels, ghost tours, relationships, and stalkers!

This is the perfect kind of book, in my opinion. There are perfect amounts of suspense, action and excitement, as well as interesting characters, deceptions and lies, friendship, hard work and an engaging plot. The only additional thing that I would like to see in book three is a touch of romance. I really love the contrast between all of the main characters, and that makes that such great friends. They're a perfect motley crew of teenagers with a virus that has warped them into something different...that they must keep secret no matter the cost. They rely and care about each other, even if they do have their little arguments and spats. I am an avid reader, and of the thousands of books that I've read, this series is my new favorite. That's saying something, coming from me. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat! You are guarenteed to love it.

I loved this book. The characters are so realistic and are very well developed. I hope that the next book well be just as good. Sometimes authors know that peolpe will read their books so the just pump out the book in a hurry to make money but this book wasn't like that. The only thing that I did not like was that the first few chapters sorta reviews what happened in the 1st book. But hey, it is rare when an author writes a sequal that is almost better than the original. The call was close but in my opinion Virals is better.

When I read Virals #1 I loved the original concept as well as the young but intelligent main characters & an attention grabbing plot. Seizure, the second book in the series, met Virals toe to toe & did not disappoint! Another attention grabbing story (this time about buried treasure) along with plenty of action & the camaraderie and humor between the members of the pack made for another amazing read. Kudos to Kathy Reichs. I can't wait to read Code!

I really love this book and this series. As a science geek myself, i really enjoy and relate to the characters. I also like that the main female is not always swooning and following a boy. Tory's heas is on pretty straight snd she can take care of herself. Overall, this is a great and hilarious series with amazing and real characters. No doubt i will be continuing onto the next book.

The main idea may seem kind of childish but this book is for all ages. The viral's have different and unique personalities unlike most ya characters. The actual adventure and mystery in the books matter, unlike other teen books where the love triangle dictates the whole plot. The characters are clever, reasorceful, and obliviously directed to the smarter percent of teens
