Library Journal - Library Journal
This set of seven books offered by Literacy Volunteers of New York City (LVNYC) provides YA and adult new readers with a variety of quality contemporary literature. Each book in the ``Writers' Voices'' series contains an unedited selection from the original work as well as a summary of the book, a short biography of the author, and a list of thought-provoking questions about the material. The selections from Anaya, Angelou, Corman, and Erdrich also include short discussions or history sections, giving the reader necessary background information to aid in an overall understanding of the story. The autobiographical writings by Angelou, Burnett, and Cosby will allow readers a chance to laugh, cry, and commiserate with three of our nation's most popular and talented entertainers. Burnett and Angelou relate experiences from their youth and adulthood. Cosby discusses family life, parenting, and growing older. Speaking Out on Health contains true stories by adult new readers about health problems they have faced (tuberculosis, sickle cell anemia, depression, alcoholism, and cerebral palsy), how they found help, and how they learned to cope with their difficulties. The stories are well written, easily understood, and inspirational. LVNYC has done an admirable job in selecting fiction and nonfiction that will appeal to literacy students who want and need to experience many types of literature. These books should help motivate students to delve deeper into the reading world. While geared for more advanced new readers, the discussion questions and activities enable these books to be used as valuable tools in a tutorial setting as well as on an individual basis.
