Selected Label Works, Vol. 3

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Rick Anderson
There are several tensions and contradictions at work on this compilation. The first is between the stiff, academic-sounding title (Selected Label Works) and the name of the label whose selected works are collected (Permanent Vacation). For the record, the music does indeed lean more in the direction of a vacation than an academic study -- or at least most of it does, which brings us to the second and more subtle element of tension here: that between the nu-disco beats that predominate and the sometimes muted textures and occasionally bloodless vocals those beats support.
Most of these 25 tracks offer plenty of fun, but a surprising number of them seem to regard fun through slightly narrowed eyes and a waft of Gauloises smoke. Take, for example, Midnight Magic's "Drop Me a Line," which opens the proceedings in a rather cold, Blondie-ish mode, and the even chillier "Echo Life" by Mirror People, the next track in sequence. Things do start to warm up from there, though: the Johan Agebjörn remix of Wolfram's "Fireworks" sounds a bit like Enya in a K-hole, while Tensnake's mix of Azari & III's "Reckless with Your Love" is downright dubby and Chuck Norris' "All That She Wants" nicely alternates techno beats with ska. The second disc is a bit more muted: a second mix of "Fireworks" opens the disc in a dubwise house mode; Candyblasta's "Black Cloud" channels middle-period David Sylvian (to nice effect), and DMX Krew pays subtle tribute to New Order on its Casiotone-powered "Taking Your Own Advice." The final track is the best on the compilation: Argy brilliantly remixes Zodiac Free Arts Club's "N.A.O.E.," turning it into a subtly jungle-flavored masterpiece of gentle dance pop.
