Overview

From the mad imagination of 19th-century gothic master of horror and suspense Edgar Allan Poe comes this deliciously gripping CD from the acclaimed Selected Shorts series that will leave listeners breathless and happily terrified. The creepy, breathtaking, and soulful classic tales include: “The Masque of the Red Death,” the terrifying and ironic story of a nobleman who attempts to seal himself and his friends away from a terrible plague raging outside, performed by Fionnula Flanagan; “The Pit and the Pendulum,” a hair-raising, first-person account of a man in a torture chamber during the Spanish Inquisition, performed to a fare-thee-well by Stephen Lang; “The Black Cat,” in which a man’s dead pet comes back to haunt him, performed by Tony Award–winner Rene Auberjonois. Plus there are dreamy, mesmerizing, and haunting readings of Poe’s wonderfully atmospheric best-loved poems, “The Bells,” “The Raven,” and “Annabel Lee.”

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Audio
An all-star roster brings to life the haunting poetry and prose of Poe in this audio collection celebrating the American master of the macabre. In his reading of “The Pit and the Pendulum,” Stephen Lang’s measured, mellifluous voice transports listeners inside the mind of the tortured narrator. Terrence Mann is equally effective in “The Tell-Tale Heart”—he captures the guilt-ridden murderer’s fear that his crime has come back to haunt him. Four narrators—René Auberjonois, Fionnula Flanagan, Isaiah Sheffer, and Harris Yulin—perform “The Raven,” an unconventional choice, but one that works perfectly due to the seamless transitions between the readers. The lyricism of Poe’s writing, which demands clear, measured enunciations and delivery, is well served by this talented cast. (Sept.)
From the Publisher
"Not much beats the pleasure of a great story read aloud. This is the inspiration behind the marvelous Selected Shorts."  —O: The Oprah Magazine
School Library Journal - Audio
Gr 7 Up—Recorded before a live audience and performed by several actors of stage, television, and film, including Terrence Mann and René Auberjonois, eight of Edgar Allen Poe's most famous stories and works of poetry are presented. The stories include "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Masque of the Red Death," "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Pit and the Pendulum," and "The Black Cat." The poems featured are "The Raven," "The Bells," and "Annabel Lee." The readers are excellent. Each actor shows a depth of understanding of Poe's work and is able to bring that appreciation to light for the audience through pacing, voicing of the characters, and strong narration skills. Many of Poe's stories involve a certain degree of madness and the shrill tones, stops, and starts of the narration help listeners imagine the wild-eyed, over-the-edge characters. A fine addition to a unit on Poe.—Ann Brownson, Eastern Illinois University, Charleston
