Wynton Marsalis's recently released LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD seven-disc set has its considerable pleasures, but its girth can be daunting. This single- disc survey of the Vanguard recordings is a perfect way to hear Marsalis's crack bands in peak condition and still have time to conduct a life. Playing at the venerated New York club brought out the best in the trumpet giant and his sidemen, superb players including pianist Marcus Roberts, saxophonists Victor Goines and Wessell Anderson, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, and drummer Herlin Riley.
