Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Theory has been used as a foundation for nursing practice in healthcare institutions and as the basis of curricula in nursing schools for decades. This book explores the high-level theory of the application of Orem's Self-Care Theory, and how it can improve patient outcomes as well as cost-effectiveness of nursing care delivery. About the Author

Susan G. Taylor, PhD, RN, FAAN, is Professor Emerita, Sinclair School of Nursing at University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Taylor has presented nationally and internationally on Orem's Self Care Theory. She is the recipient of many awards, including Alumnae of the Year from Alverno College, Missouri Tribute to Nurses Nurse Educator, Kemper Fellow for Teaching Excellence, and the MO Alumni Association Faculty Award.

Katherine Renpenning , MScN, is a nursing consultant whose career has primarily focused on the utility of self-care deficit nursing theory in improving nursing practice and nursing education.

Purpose: Their purpose is to look at the interrelationship of Orem's theory of self-care, nursing theory, and EBP through the lens of nursing practice, a method that has not been examined before.
Audience: This book is appropriate for nurse theorists, researchers, and students, and would be especially useful for health professionals interested in health-related self-care.
Features: The 10 chapters are grouped into two sections: one on self-care science and nursing theory and one on the practice sciences of the discipline of nursing. The book uses case examples to illustrate the application of the theories to practice and contains many tables and figures that explain terms and the various theories.
