A real-life view of relationships - deep insights made practical

I love this book. The author doesn’t waste time painting an unrealistic, overly rosy picture of marriage. He tells it like it is: marriage is one of the most potentially satisfying things two people can do. But it’s also high on the scale of difficulty. And so it helps to know what’s actually going on.

Why are we having fights every weekend? Why does it always seem like we’re looking over each other’s shoulders and unable to understand our separate points of view? How can I change my own behavior and help make this marriage work for both of us? These are the kinds of questions Kriyananda addresses, without ever sugar-coating the hard lessons that marriage is intended to help people learn.

Basically this book says that life tests us through marriage. Marriage challenges us to expand our hearts and find our own happiness by helping another person be happy. There’s a lot of wisdom here, about how to become that kind of fulfilled and helping kind of happy person.

This book offers a lot more than the usually temporary “fix-it” techniques. It gives big, deep principles that we can apply in countless situations, all toward gradually building a lasting, happy marriage.

Probably the most important idea I discovered in its pages is the danger of contractive attitudes – of “getting for me” in all its unhappy-making, weasley forms – and the happiness-making power of expansiveness, where we promote the other person’s health, love, strength, wisdom, and joy.

The author suggests many practical ways to expand our personal awareness in marriage. Its pages are full of practical applied philosophy. Probably the best recommendation I can make is that I’ve found its principles to be 100 percent true in my own relationships over the years (I’m age 70 now).

This book presents a higher level of thinking about how to connect with our partners as well as a deeper one introducing the essence behind true happiness in relationships. This has helped me communicate better in relationships. It has helped me learn not to rely on others for happiness. Now I always try and test if a thought, feeling or action I would like to take makes me feel expansive or contractive and let that be my guide in decision making. It made me realize what is a more powerful way to draw people into my life and stay close with them over time. It has helped me understand the importance of combining feminine and masculine energy whether it lives in the woman or man. I better stop now or I will share all the lessons I learned in this wonderful book. I highly recommend it if you want to take a high road in any type of relationship you have.
