Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
When Seymour's The Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency was first published in 1976, it became a handbook for those seeking a simple, self-supporting way of life. Now this out-of-print classic is available in a revised edition, which basically contains the same information, namely, lots of advice on growing food, raising animals, and preparing and preserving food. One chapter focuses on crafts; another discusses energy production for the homestead. The two editions have almost the same illustrations, but those in the newer edition are in full color and on glossy paper, making this volume much more attractive. In addition, an updated bibliography includes web sites, associations, and seed suppliers. It would be hard to find another similar book with so much information on small-scale farming in one place. This book, along with Seymour's revised The Forgotten Arts and Crafts, will appeal to those seeking simpler and environmentally responsible ways of living: "This way of life suits me," writes Seymour, "it has kept me fit and at least partly sane into my 89th year, and it has prevented me from doing too much harm to our poor planet." Recommended for all libraries, even if they already own the earlier edition.-Ilse Heidmann, Washington State Lib., Olympia Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Meet the Author

John Seymour is remembered as the "Father of Self-Sufficiency." Educated in England and Switzerland, his worldwide experience of husbandry and the benefits of rural life is unparalleled. After studying at an agricultural college, he worked on farms in England, and then spent some 10 years in Africa, where he managed a sheep and cattle farm and acted as a livestock officer for a veterinary department.

His most influential contribution was to live, teach, and promote self-sufficiency, first on five acres, and then on 62 acres, and then in Ireland, where the School of Self-Sufficiency that he established with Angela Ashe attracts new recruits in increasing numbers.

    One of the Best!

This is an incredible gardening/living off the land book! The book itself is excellent: well constructed, with increduble, colorful illustrations. For topics, it covers literally "everything" that one could encounter on a smaller homestead or farm: from simple gardening all the way to wild game. This is another of my books in my personal library that friends always "borrow"! That is always a ringing endorsement! One last item: there is a newer edition that includes a significant section from one of Mr. Seymour's earlier gardening books; buy that edition!

    Must Own

I first read this book from the library after we had raised a few turkeys. This book was my inspiration for moving out of the city and into the country. Packed with information and great illustrations this book is one that I read over and over again each year. I just can't say enough good things about this book. This book would be a great addition to your library!

    Love Love Love

Absolutely love the information that is enclosed within this book. It is truly for those who would like to start making changes toward self-sufficiency or jumping all in and taking the total plunge! Practical, sensible and easy how to steps! This book helped me plan and organize my first productive garden with great success. I am now revamping my chicken coop for better production. I live on one acre in CA and am making the most of every part of it thanks to this book. Enjoy!

    A reviewer

This book explores the possibilities of becoming self-sufficient and how to do so. It goes into great detail on learning new skills like dressing out animals, crop rotation, solar alternatives, etc. I am a fan of green living, and this book supports how to do that on a budget. Absolutely tickled pink.

    a copy of my own

I checked this book out from my library on a whim. After growing up on the 'Little House on the Prairie' books and living the city life the title had great appeal to me. The book held my attention and actually my children and husband had the book when I wanted to read it so it was time to return the book before we were finished with it. This book is full of information, delightful to read and plenty of sketches to hold even my youngests attention. I am purchasing a copy of our own for entertainment, reference when reading the 'Little House...' books and the James Herriott 'All Creatures Great and Small' series, and hope to someday actually use the information and retreat from city life.
