Zephyr Addler has a problem. Her boyfriend, Timber, is now her ex, because she was keeping secrets from him. But what else can she do? After all, it's not that easy being an elf in the middle of Brooklyn--especially when she's not allowed to use magic to hide her family's quirky elvin ways. To make matters worse, Bella, the meanest girl in school and Zephyr's archrival, has vowed to make Zephyr's life a living nightmare. Can Zephyr keep it together long enough to win Timber back, or will she give in to temptation and work some forbidden elven magic in the school halls?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Denise Daley
This novel starts as a trite teenage drama but it quickly turns into a unique and exciting adventure. The main character is a teenaged elf named Zephyr. Her and her family recently moved to Brooklyn where Zephyr is trying to fit in at the prestigious Academy for Performing Arts High School. Zephyr and her elf cousin Briar, along with a group of talented human teenagers, all audition for parts in the winter school musical. Confronted with typical adolescent problems such as "will I get the part" and "does he like me?" Zephyr also must learn how to conform to human ways and hide her elfin abilities. This becomes increasingly difficult as Briar sneakily casts spells on others and attracts attention to herself by singing and dancing their secret elfin songs. To make matters worse, a scheming duo of supposed humans seem to have a surprising secret of their own. The excitement builds as secrets are revealed in this thrilling young adult novel. VOYA - Donna Phillips
Selfish Elf Wish continues the saga of teen elf Zephyr Addler and her classmates at Brooklyn Academy for the Performing Arts High School (BAPAHS). The cast from Me, My Elf, and I are into a new holiday musical, Idle America. Zephyr and Timber are still a couple; Bella still her archrival; Mercedes, Ari, and Kenji still her erdler (non-elf) friends. Briar, Zephyr's cousin, joins the cast, emigrating from Alverland in the U.P. of Michigan to attend BAPAHS. She is eager for romance with Kenji and mischief of any sort. This foible lands everyone in trouble when she gets involved with Clay and Dawn, two Dark Elves passing themselves off as slick impresarios looking for talent. The characters and the story are forced back to Alverland, but not before sharing an erdler Thanksgiving dinner crossed with an elven harvest feast. With Timber and Kenji following their hearts to Alverland, the book is replete with more two-way intercultural faux pas as the erdlers make sense of elves in the same way the elves try to make sense of the erdlers. Like the first book, serious themes—like individual identity at odds with community expectations—elevate the book a bit above mere fluff. This magical twist on High School Musical seems destined to have its Return of the King; the unfinished story of the Dark Elves strongly suggests one more book, adequate fare for those who wish they could solve a few small problems with a spell or a hex.
