While Gray's evocative, Celtic-favored vocals resonate sweetly on "Hold on to Nothing" and spit bitterness on the title cut, Sell Sell Sell is marked by a lush sound more in keeping with albums from American kin like the Jayhawks or Matthews's band. Failing, however, to live up to its title, Sell Sell Sell wound up getting Gray dropped from his label, despite his aggressive touring with the Matthews Band and Radiohead. He couldn't have known it at the time, but Gray's frustration with major labels and big-budget recordings would prompt him to record and release the low-key, low budget White Ladder and, ironically, find the success that had so long eluded him. Now reissued and reaching new hordes of fans, Sell Sell Sell stands as a gorgeous, dynamic folk-inspired rock album that invites and rewards rediscovery.
