Overview

Jen Maddox is a few days into her summer study abroad program and has loved every moment. She just left Mexico and is back on her cruise ship campus, ready to sail to Panama. Everyone tells her that the experience will change her life, but none of them realize just how drastic the change will be.

One night she goes out on deck and encounters five other students. She knows Charlie from one of her classes and he's a funny, friendly, regular guy. Picture-perfect Dani and his gorgeous wife Mariana live right down the hall from Jen. And she has seen TS, who's built like a truck, around the ship and recognizes the cute, but quiet Thomas as well.

Then Jen sees something that isn't humanly possible. Jen would have thought that it was all a dream, if not for the fact that Charlie, Dani, Mariana, TS, and Thomas are making every effort to cover it up. Suddenly, the five of them are everything but normal and Jen is determined to figure out what they're hiding.

When she does, her life really does change. Jen expected to spend her summer studying ancient Aztec and modern Panamanian worlds, but she never dreamed she'd learn about a magical one. Or find herself in it.

But Jen's childhood fantasy come true is about to turn into a nightmare; there's something on the ship. Something dangerous. Suddenly, everyone on board is threatened by a creature Jen never even believed existed. Jen and her new friends might be the only people who can stop it!

Now Jen has to learn everything she can about her new world before it kills her. And her friends. And maybe everyone on the entire ship.

A friend of mine recommended that I read Elizabeth's novel and I am sincerely glad that she did. In terms of paranormal adventure, this book has it all hands down, and in a way that is a little different from most of what I have read lately. There are vampires and werewolves, but not what most of us have learned from movies and other books. There are also mermaids, witches, and for the first time in a long time, elementals, beings that can control and are restricted by a certain element, whether it is wood, water, or fire, as were introduced in the novel. Semester Aboard made me not only want to curl up and read till my eyes fell out, but also made me want to explore South America. Elizabeth did a fantastic job of describing not only the action that takes place among the band of what could be termed misfits, as each is different or I should say unique, but also the terrain and scenery. I felt as if I was in the desert at one point and the jungle in the next. The whole story flowing from one sequence to the next while still drawing the reader in. I loved it, and will probably re-read it before the next eagerly awaited novel is released. I loved the characters, the plot, heck the setting was absolutely wonderful. So, if you are looking for some action and adventure, then this book is for you.

Disclaimer: I received an e-copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Words just can't seem to describe how awesome this book is!!! But I will try...... =) We follow Jen on a Semester-at-Sea type program around Latin/South America, and along the way, she meets some rather.....interesting characters who tell her something about herself that's incredibly life-changing. Throw in things like vampires, werewolves, elementals, mermaids, and witches, among many others, and you have one amazing story! I hated to put it down to work/sleep/etc, and was almost late for work one day because I was so engrossed in the story. I found myself really attached to the main characters, and they reminded me of some of my friends. I want to be in Jen's shoes so badly, not only to go on a summer-long cruise (although, without the classes would be better!), but to meet all the new people she does. Her world is simply awesome, and I greatly appreciate Elizabeth Kirke's ability to write a story like this, that I consider vastly different from other supernatural books out there. Kudos, and give me the next one already!!! =D 5 stars (wish I could give more)

I was given the opportunity to read this book as a part of a book review club. I am so glad I had the chance! Yes, this book is another epic tale in which a girl comes of age, only to find out that she has special powers. Yes, it is another book in which a group of paranormal beings get together to fight off the evil ones. It is also another book that you should just go ahead and buy and enjoy. First, I love the idea of spending a semester on a ship, traveling around the world, while also taking college courses. Talk about life experience! There is just something romantic about traveling and meeting new people. Second, I love the relationships between the characters. They are all multifaceted and true to life. I have known people like them in real life, except, of course, for their paranormal powers. Jen doesn't randomly wake up one day with her powers; she has to study and learn how to use them. There is still a lot that she doesn't know. The reader is taken along for the ride, learning all about this supernatural world that exists within our own. The story unfolds in what feels like real time, which I also appreciated. I have heard that there is a sequel in the works, and I can't wait to read it!

Ms Kirke has given a great read. I wanted to be Jen. She has signed by for a semester long cruise to study South America but along the way she learns more than she could have ever imagined. Fairly early in the journey she begins to meet some very unusual companions plus she learns a lot about herself. This story has vampires, werewolves, elementals, it has conflict and it has love. I came away having learned so much about these magics and I am pretty sure that you will too. Ms Kirke has such a wonderful way with words that you will find yourself completely accepting the reality of these character and wanting them to be your friends too. As soon as I read the last sentence I wanted the next book to appear in my hands. Whether you are a young adult or an older adult you will enjoy this book and be glad that you chose to read it.

Semester Abroad Review: A friend of mine introduced me to this series and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Having recently jumped on the YA band wagon I found this to be a great starting point. Our main character, Jen accidently sees something that she can't explain and in that brief moment her entire world changes. Jen discovers that there is a world of magic out there and she is a part of it. Through the help of her new friends Thomas, TS, Danio, Char and Marianna, Jen is rediscovering herself, learning to be a witch and trying to save the ship from vampires. There is even a new budding romance on the horizon for her. The book was chopped full of action and was fast paced. A definite page turner. I immediately purchased the 2nd book in the series, Snow Bound, upon finishing. I look forward to following this author and seeing what is next for these characters.

Loved it!! This story was so intriguing right from the beginning. A semester on a cruise ship sounds amazing on its own but once you add a few gorgeous guys who can do some seriously odd stuff - now I'm hooked! I loved how persistently curious Jen was after she spotted something out of the ordinary, she just had to have an explanation. Although she may have gotten a little more than she bargained for! I just can't get enough of all the new friends she makes on the cruise - each one has such a unique personality and made me fall in love them right away! This is definitely a new favorite!

Jen is looking forward to spending an entire summer studying abroad on a cruise ship and she knows the experience will change her life. Then she sees something she wasn't supposed to see, something she can't explain. Jen finds herself thrust into a world she never knew existed and her life will change more than she imagined. That is, if she can survive the dangers lurking on the ship.   Wow an awesome read! And now wonder Dani was nominated for hero! I loved him from start to finish. His the of kind guy with the awesome hero stuff needed to save the day. With this epic hero we also have the very observant Jen who ensures for some surprising moments. Then we have Thomas who is the group's leader and tries to keep them save the whole time. An amazing adventure from start to finish! You get to see another world of magic and paranormal species. We even have merfolk! And what an awesome way to start college! On a cruise ship jumping from one country to the next.   I was running through the paces to try and find out what is going to happen next. If you're looking for a new concept in the paranormal world this is it. Well-deserved 5 Stars!

I was given this book for a honest review. How many great things can I say about this book?!? It took me a few pages to get into it, but I was sucked in! The author did a great job with the character development, and there were a lot of characters to deal with! As the story progressed, I got to learn more and more about each person: their "gifts" and how they use them. There was a sense of mystery in this book and the fight scenes were well played. As with the main character of this story, Jenn, she was very interesting as well as identifiable. There was magic, magic and more magic on a voyage on a "ship", which fits the title. I cannot wait to read the next book because the cliff hanger left me wanting more to sink my teeth into!

Ive never wanted to go on a cruise so much in my life! Not because i wanted to run into magics and discover than i too am magic.. However how awesome would that be!! Too bad im too "old" .. Kirke really made it sound like a wonderful adventure.. More than magic takes a look at a floating college that happens to have a group of magical government agents.. A fire elemental, water elemental, werewolf, Mermaid and a used to be wizard.. They befriend our narrator Jen.. And good thing too because Jen is a witch! She didnt know she was magic until a series of events made it clear to the group of magics she was a witch and then they let her in on her secret.. They teach Jen how to do some magic (not very much magic at all) and what it means to be magic.. The spells come in somewhat handy while they are floating along.. Everyone on board the ship is getting sick and after Tom (our used to be wizard) notices some bite marks on one of Jens friends he immediately knows theres a rouge vamp on the loose illegally drinking from the passengers.. The team of magics all work together to try to bring this sucker down and they get a bit more than they bargained for.. They travel all around and have all sorts of magical beings.. The friendships they all shared made me soo envious! i need a group of friends like that.. what i think ive got some! Although theres one thing about the friendships that bothered me.. all the damn secrets they kept from Jen.. They should have a pamphlet "So your Magic".. Oh and the not teaching the girl enough magic.. seriously there was time in between fighting vamps to teach her more than warming herself.. night vision and making sparks just saying! plus why didnt they like get her a magical tutor for after the semester.. how is she supposed to learn this one her own!! Ahh maybe the second book will answer that for me..

I read this book in one sitting!!!! I absolutely loved this book. It is well written and all of the characters are very well rounded and completely lovable. Elizabeth Kirke is a brilliant story teller who has woven magic in a book about magic. I love the interaction of all the main characters and the supporting players are just right. I have fallen in love with this writer and am anxiously awaiting the sequel to this book so I can be with some wonderful friend again

I had a hard time to put into words how much I truly loved this book. It has vampires, elementals, mermaids, witches, etc. I truly thought it was a fantastic blending of all these characters. Jen was really likable I found myself rooting for her. She is a smart girl, with a good head on her shoulders. That is hard to find sometimes. I found it interesting how her personality was so open and understanding, I really liked that. All the other main characters I loved as well. Kirke really made me love everyone in the book. The group of friends acted so much like a real group of friends; it made me feel like I was right there beside them watching this entire book take place. I tried to pick my favorite character at the end, but it was so hard. At first it was Charlie, but as the book progressed I started to get to know all of them and loved them all. This is a fantasy novel if you haven’t figured that out yet. Everyone in this book is 18 or older. So I guess it falls in that New Adult age ranking? I am still confused about that whole new genre thing. It definitely has some YA crossover appeal I imagine. There’s nothing that I can think of that would keep me from suggesting it to YA. The only complaint I have about this book is that the book ended lol. The author has actually been to all these places which is a fun little fact. There will be a book two. When there is a solid confirmation on release date I will let you guys know. I really can’t wait to see what happens next. I received this book from the author for free for an honest review.

*I recieved this book for an honest review Absolutly amazing book! This book is so fantastic that I literally could not put it down. I read it non-stop late into the hours at night and woke up early to read Semester Aboard. The characters were so interesting and unique, unlike anything I've read before. Char, Dani, TS, Jen, Mariana, and Tom are now some of my all-time favorite characters because of their humor, kindness, witt, and above all loyalty to eachother. The storyline in the book was so different then what I've read before but I love, love it!! I cannot say enough good things about this book. All everyone needs to know is that everyone needs to read this because its amazing. I loved this book from the phrases like "Splashy" and "Toasty" to the how far the characters went to stick together and remain loyal. I cannot wait for the sequel to Semester Aboard, I know its going to be just as amazing as this book!

What a fun roller coaster ride this book was! It certainly wasn't what I expected and as I've read a lot of books in my lifetime, it takes a lot to surprise me. I thought I was going to read a book about a girl on a cruise who discovers a Paranormal world ... I just didn't expect the Paranormal world to be so intricate and chocked full of surprises and 'wow' moments. It is obvious that Kirke gave a lot of thought to her characters. Each one is unique because their personalities match their Paranormal power. I really don't want to say too much for fear of spoiling it, but this is not your typical vampire/werewolf Paranormal book. Yes, those creatures are present, but there is so much more to this story than that. Threading through the entire storyline is Jen's development as a heroine as she learns to use her powers as a witch, as well as the growing friendship between herself and her new friends who are also a part of this strange world she's suddenly found herself a part of. The cast of characters was so fun and likeable that by the end I felt as if they were my friends too! I totally wanted to hang out with them. The setting was also great! Kirke takes the reader on a journey through exotic lands and the sea, displaying a knowledge of each place as well as knowledge of water travel and sailing. It was obvious the writer knew her stuff and I had fun learning about each new place as well as envisioning the Paranormal elements that existed within the story. If anything was missing from this book, I'd have to say I wished for more development of the romance that takes place between Jen and Thomas. It was unexpected, but once it happened I wanted more as Thomas fast became my favorite character. However, the ending left no doubt that there is more to this story and I hope that means more romance! All in all a job well done and the start of something I look forward to getting more of in the future.

Wow I wasn't sure what to expect with this book when I started it, but once I did I was amazed and couldn't put it down. I loved it. I love how it has so many paranormal creatures in it. She puts all your favorites in one book.It also shows you what it really means to be a friend to someone. Thomas is my favorite charater. Its ends in just the right way that your like hurry with the next book.

More than Magic lives up to its name! The book was captivating and intriguing. It was also filled with great characters that made you care about every single one of them. The characters are the things that draw you in the most. They each have their moments of wit, humor, and intensity: automatically making the reader feel a connection. And none of them are without their faults. Without risking a spoiler, a few of the characters even had such tragedy and heartache in their pasts that it made the reader instantly drawn to them. Their suffering and experiences were extremely touching and made you want to cry at times. However, they were also uplifting, because they all conquered the horrible things in their pasts and let even the most terrible experiences shape who they had become! The spin on each magical being (vampires, werewolves, witches, and various elementals) was refreshing and kept you wondering where the next twist was going to be. The earthly elemental characters were an amazing touch and helped the story stand out on its own. I also loved the fact that all of her twists were explained, and the author didn’t leave you confused. It was also a fast read. From chapter one, you’ll be hooked and want to know what’s coming next. That being said, I can’t wait for the sequel. The book ends with an awesome cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend.

What do you look for in young adult fantasy? If your answer has anything to do with relatable characters, creative spins on familiar magical beings, and adventures that will keep you on the edge of your seat, check out More than Magic: Semester Aboard. It's got a modern take on magic, combining laptops with leviathons. It's got three-dimensional, realistic characters you will fall in love with (and possibly want to date). It's got someone new to the magical world, learning with you. Above all, it's a story where being stronger, smarter, better isn't how you win. And it's got some clever twists I'd never have expected. Some of the people I know who've read it, found the beginning slow - I didn't - but if you do, keep reading. Trust me, it's worth it.

Semester aboard (More than Magic #1) By Elizabeth Kirke Reviewed by S. Bree High YATR I started reading this book and could not put it down. I was hooked after chapter one! I want to hang out with the characters in the book. I mean come on…Witches, Vampires, mermaids, werewolves….just to name a few! This book for a paranormal nerd like me happens to be better than candy! Jen gets to study for a semester at sea. One that is pretty cool. Although it does not take much before she realizes there is a lot more going on than meets the eye. Jen learns that mythological creatures are real. Magic it turns out to be something Jen has too. (Witch, hmmmm read the book) This is all something she never knew existed but it appears is part of her future. Jen is so out of sorts and screws up quite a bit but her friends are all there to help her along the way. I loved that too! Her friends are great characters and all of them are so interesting. Her new friends, Dani-water element called Nereid, Mariana-mermaid, T.S.-werewolf, Charlie-fire elemental called an IMP, and Thomas-whose magical powers are gone but there is something else going on there. They all work for a magical government agency called MES. I really enjoyed the water and fire elements. We have suspense and drama. Of course we have romance! Secrets are being kept but will she be able to figure them out? Will they hurt her? Hurt the group? This book has it all. Each character fit so well in the story and created an unconventional family of sorts. They need to protect her from the evil on the ship. (Dani and Mariana) Battles will be fought against the evil and how will this turn out, read the book people! I promise you want to know. Elizabeth Kirke wrote a great book and I am looking forward to the second book which I hear is out in December. YEH!! I am being patient and waiting for the next adventures of the MES team.
