Overview

Made into a hilarious and timeless film starring Burt Reynolds, Kris Kristofferson, and Jill Clayburgh, and recently named number seven on Sports Illustrated's Top 100 Sports Books of All Time, Semi-Tough is Dan Jenkins's masterpiece and considered by many to be the funniest sports book ever written. The novel follows the outsize adventures of Billy Clyde Puckett, star halfback for the New York Giants, whose team has come to Los Angeles for an epic duel with the despised "dog-ass" Jets in the Super Bowl. But Billy Clyde is faced with a dual challenge: not only must he try to run over a bunch of malevolencies incarnate, but he has also been commissioned by a New York book publisher to keep a journal of the events leading up to, including, and following the game. Infused with Dan Jenkins's characteristic joie de vivre and replete with cigarettes, whiskey, and wild women, Semi-Tough is an uproarious romp through a lost era of professional sports that will have any armchair quarterback falling out of his or her recliner in hysterics on a semi-regular basis.

One of my all-time favorite books, and one that I recommend to everyone who loves reading and sports. Especially if they've spent time in a locker room or working in college athletics. Dan Jenkins is an exceptional writer, and has been for decades. Highly recommend!!!

Not fit for Recycling. I would give it a negative 10

This book was so foul and filthy that I threw it in the garbage, not the recycling, because I did not want to contaminate everything that was being recycled! Shame on Dan Jenkins.

The Comedic Truth Behind the 70's NFL

Former Sports Illustrated writer Dan Jenkins has created one of the best written, comedic, and in-depth books on professional football in the 1970's. The story revolves around the main character, fictitious New York Giants running back, Billy Clyde Puckett and his Giants teammates as they spend a week in southern California 'preparing' for a Super Bowl matchup with the New York Jets. This hilarious look inside the world of Puckett reveals an array of quirky, outrageous, redneck, and fun-loving characters who move the story along as Puckett recalls the hazy nights that have lined his life and football career since his days at TCU. Jenkins skill as a gifted story teller comes to the fore as he describes the other members of the Giants and the features, including one man's extraordinary bodily emissions, that define this cast of characters. This book is a must read for the true football fan. While some of the language is a bit rough, and out of place in this time, if taken in context will not be offensive but descriptive. This story will leave you laughing out loud and wishing the story never had to end, saving you from having to part company with this incredible cast of characters.
