When Gus and Loki deploy to Afghanistan, though, they have no choice but to learn to work together. Because in war, getting along is a matter of life and death.

DOG TAGS is a series of stand-alone books, each exploring the bond between soldier and dog in times of war.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Anna Whaley
We have all heard the saying, “A dog is a man’s best friend,” but have you every stopped to think why this is so? London answers this question in a unique way when man and man’s best friend go to war. This fictional book tells the story of Gus Dempsey, who joins the US Marine Corps, knowing that he will be a great dog handler because he has always been good with dogs. But when Gus meets Loki, he is not sure anymore. Loving and playful, Gus is the opposite of what the Marine Corps needs. Readers are immediately invited into the novel by the front cover, which pictures a man and a beautiful black lab surrounded by a war-like atmosphere. Through many trials and upsets, Gus and Loki put their true friendship to the test and learn the importance of teamwork. This story will appeal equally to both boys and girls. While many young readers may not be able to relate to the US Marine Corps lifestyle, they can certainly understand the relationship between a dog and its owner. While the book’s characters happen to be in a war zone, the ultimate story is that of friendship. London brings both imagination and realism to this book, exposing readers to the life of a Marine and his dog and how, ultimately, getting along can mean life of death in war. Reviewer: Anna Whaley; Ages 9 to 12.
