The author introduces young actors to the joys and how-to's of performing scenes written in true Hollywood industry-standard style (half-hour situation comedy and one-hour drama) in preparation for professional stage and screen auditions. +30 scenes are incorporated, each is titled for quick content perusal, easy to understand & requires a minimum of props and works in impromptu settings. Interviews are presented with three top industry experts--two veteran casting directors and a television writer-- discussing current requirements for teen actors. A glossary of industry terms, index and bibliography of basic-to-challenging plays teens should read are also included as a study aid. Great for classroom, variety talent shows, competitions, and ultimately, auditions.

Gr 7 Up-Like the other entries in this series, this volume offers young actors fresh audition material written by an acting coach who works with kids. Stevens presents more than 30 short comedy and drama scenes, all written for two actors with an even mix of boy-boy, girl-girl, and boy-girl casts. The contemporary urban and suburban settings coupled with culturally neutral names allow for racial and ethnic diversity. Older high school students, however, may find the humor in the comedy sketches a bit juvenile. Solutions come together too easily in a very short time frame in the dramatic pieces, and this may come off as unrealistic to some of the more sophisticated readers who would be interested in this book. For the most part, though, the scenes will be enjoyable to young dramatists and their teachers, and most leave room for students to be creative in their interpretations. A useful section at the end includes interviews with Hollywood insiders, acting exercises, a glossary of industry terms, and a bibliography of plays any serious teen actor should read. Libraries that serve large or growing drama programs would certainly want to consider purchasing this title.-Toni D.     Very Weak Material Here!

    I was very disappointed in this book. As an acting teacher I thought I would be getting a book of fun and challenging short scenes for my students. Many of the scenes are between an adult and one kid. They are not scenes one could use for theater - they are for on-camera work - and even then they read like those sappy after-school specials. I was also shocked by the amount of typos in this book as well as famous plays listed WITH THE INCORRECT TITLES! That is really a shocker - not very professional at all. This book was a waste of money. Look elsewhere for material.

    My teenager loves this book!

    My son is interested in acting so I bought him this book and also the monologue book for teenagers by Chambers Stevens. They've been a really great tools for him because he hasn't been able to find many scene/monologue books that he likes. But he's devoured these books and I can tell an improvement in his acting. I definitely recommend both.

    Great book for scene studies.

    I picked up this book when I was looking for scenes to do for class. I wasn't expecting much but this book was worth the cover price. There's tons of scenes to choose from. I liked the fact that the scenes were simple but complex. As I was practicing with my scene partner, I realized the book gives you a good starting point to really find your characters and work the scene. Nice find.

    Amazing

    Need a great scene and refuse to settle with mediocrity? Pick up this book asap! Stevens really knows how to weed out the stale scenes found in so many scene books. Every scene brings something new to the table and will delight your audience with witty,funny and original dialogue.

    Excellent!!

    What a great resource. This book has a great mix of scenes for actors of all ages and genders. To be competitive in the acting business an actor must be ready for anything this book helps you get there. If you only buy one scene study book this should be it.
