All Music Guide - Darryl Cater
Patrick Doyle began his career in film music writing scores for Kenneth Branagh's films -- but he didn't receive his first Oscar nomination until he wrote this one for Branagh's then-wife, Emma Thompson whose magic touch with the Academy landed her almost annual nominations in the 1990s. Since then, Doyle seems to have joined the small group of score writers who get voted in year after year by the old boys' club that is the Academy's musical wing. However, this is not Doyle's best work -- most of it simply recycles melodic phrases from his previous stuff. Nonetheless, Sense and Sensibility has a pleasant romanticism in its orchestrations, and the vocal solos by renowned ...

    I Also Recommend:

One of my most favorite CDs

This is a really great CD soundtrack. My family and I like to listen to this while we clean or do other things. This is a must have for any Jane Austen fan.

    Musical Genius

If you were to look up "musical genius" in the dictionary, you would find Patrick Doyle's name. Sense and Sensibility, Great Expectations, and A Little Princess are, I think, his best works. The seemingly simple melodies of the pieces in this score bring to mind picturesque English landscapes, and perfectly encompasses the mood of a Jane Austen classic such as Sense and Sensibility, being both proper and wildly romantic.

    Lovely

The 'Sense and Sensibility' soundtrack is absolutly gorgeous - lilting instrumentals, the wonderful themes, and the added enjoyment of soprano Jane Eaglen on the opening and closing tracks make this one of my favorite CDs. The two aforementioned songs - "Weep You No More Sad Fountains" and "The Dreame" were extraordinarily beautiful - they sound right out of 1800.(I do wish they had used Kate Winslet's performance from the film, though - it was quite beautiful, and more in keeping with the feeling of the other music.) I also enjoyed the tracks "Willoughby" and "Miss Grey" - lively dancing tunes from the ballroom scene in the film. My favorites were without a doubt "There Is Nothing Lost" - the 'poetry reading scene' on the lawn, and "Throw the Coins" - the music for Edward's proposal and Marianne and Colonel Brandon's wedding. The latter captured completely all the joy and love in the last scene of the film. I recommend this CD very highly - anyone who enjoyed the film will like it very much, also anyone who cares for tasteful, passionate, well arranged pieces.
