Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
The series "True Books" has been available for many years. This title in that series is a new release redesigned for today's children. It catches the attention of readers by beginning with two true or false questions that are answered within the rest of the book. Six chapters cover topics such as how the brain responds to smell; the two functions of the nose; how scents make us feel; and the work of a professional sniffer. Many interesting facts, some well known, such as taste is mostly smell, and other less obvious (lobsters have an excellent sense of smell) are presented in clear, easily understood language. Readers should find the time line about the history of perfume fascinating. Illustrations combine color photographs and drawings to enhance the text. The two-page chart on the relationship of parts of the brain to the sense of smell is sure to be of interest to youngsters. Supplementary sources found on pages forty-four and forty-five will be valuable for those seeking more information. In addition to a bibliography, web sites, organizations and museums (with their web site addresses) are provided. This book will be very useful in science classes and for writing assignments. It should be on the priority buy list. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
