Children's Literature - Elizabeth Leis-Newman
Whether it is the eyes, ears, mouth or skin, the human body allows us to access all five senses in different ways. Morgan takes a refreshing approach to tackling the sense, with sections that include "Looking and Seeing," "Hearing and Listening," and "Keeping One's Balance." The book is loosely structured so that the human body part—i.e. the nose—is explained and then followed up with the sense it is related to, i.e. "Why Smell is Important." The biology is accurate, although physicians/teachers will grow frustrated by a section on eyes that should have explained the difference between ophthalmologists, optometrists' and opticians, rather than ascribe all eye exams to optometrists. Children will enjoy the "When Things Go Wrong" fact boxes, which include how a hole in an eardrum can cause hearing loss and how someone can lose a sense. The final section on "Do You Have a Sixth Sense?" is a nice addition. While Morgan makes clear this sense is not scientifically proven, bolded words like "telepathy" are good entry points to a discussion of "gut feelings." This would be a fine addition to an elementary school classroom or library. A glossary and additional reading list are included. It is part of Amicus' "How the Body Works" series.
