A Read for Military Spouses Only

"Guide for Military Couples" leads the reader to believe that the book will be beneficial for both partners in the relationship. I felt especially let down that being a prior service member herself, the author was not more compelled to share tips for the deployed spouse. Not to mention, as I am a military woman who is currently deployed, I had high hopes that Shellie Vandevoorde might provide guidance from experience as a female deployer when she leaves her husband at home. Sadly, she did not. While I do understand that writing to the wider audience of military dependant spouses was ideal to sell more copies, I really expected at the very least a chapter to the deploying spouse instead of the extremely sparse, few sentences. In a word: disappointed.

    A must read book!

I absolutely love this book. I could not put it down. I bought this while my husband was deployed for the first time. I was upset and depressed and didnt know how to deal with all my emotions. This book helped me understand and cope better with the deployment. I reccomend every military wife read this book.

A Book for Newlyweds and Old Veterans Alike

Shellie Vandevoorde's book, Separated by Duty, United in Love, is a wonderful and comprehensive guide to long-distance relationships for military couples. In this updated edition, Mrs. Vandevoorde addresses the concerns of both service member and spouse during every phase of a deployment from pre-deployment mind games to issues with managing homecoming expectations. Mrs. Vandevoorde draws on her own experiences and interviews with service members and other military spouses. She handles even the most sensitive issues, like budgets, infidelity, and wounded warriors, with tactful, sound advice. As an Army brat and an officer with 14 years of service and three deployments, I highly recommend this book for newly married couples and veterans alike. Veteran military couples might think there's nothing new in this book but they will be surprised by how much they learn. Ed Cox, author of Grey Eminence: Fox Conner and the Art of Mentorship

    A reviewer

The book was overall good but its more for those who are already married to the military. As a girlfriend alot of the info I would used once I'm married and living on base dealing with deployments and returns. The 'games' she mentioned in the beginning of the book I can relate to because when my military guy comes home to visit on 4 day weekends and its time for us to go to the airport to see him off my attitude changes completely. At the time I cant control the emotions knowing Im not going to see him for another 6-8 weeks minimum. After the fact, when hes on that plane I start to feel guilty because I should of been nicer and said I love you with a little more feeling. This book also opened my eyes alot when it came to 'death', what to expect, steps to take, getting all the right info from your spouse and actually talking about it. Its a good book to read just because - I recommend it.

great help for those in love with a military man/woman

After reading this book I have learned to understand what my boyfriend is going through before he left for his first deployment. I¿m new to the whole military experience, for no one in my family or any of my friends are a part of the military lifestyle. Vandevoorde was able to explain what to expect before and after they leave. Although I am not a military wife and most of the book is dedicated to those who are, her book provides an insight to those whose relationships survived the tests of time and preparation for those who may, in the future, become military wives themselves. In general, her book gives hope to those who stand alone in their choice to love a man, or woman, who lives their life to serve their country.

A Must Read for military couples

My favorite chapter is the Communication chapter. I remember thinking, 'oh my goodness we do this'. It was nice to see that other military couples go through the same thing, and appreciated the suggestions offered in the book -- THEY WORK!! The book if full of great tips that have made deployments easier and more manageable.
