Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cindy K. Schofield
This is an excellent overview of the events of September 11, 2001 and the impact the day continues to have on present day life. In addition to telling the 9/11 story, the book contains the overlaying theme that studying history can be fun and engaging. It points to primary and secondary sources for examining evidence, and encourages a reader to look at facts in the context of the time in which they happened. The table of contents clearly outlines the focus of the book. After the scene is set with a description of the start of an ordinary day in New York City and the take-off of Flight 11 from Boston, MA., chapter one, "Attacked!" describes each of the horrible events that make it clear that the first crash was not an awful accident but rather, a part of a larger terror attack. The World Trade Center collapses, the crash into the Pentagon, and the revolt on Flight 93 are all described in clear, journalistic text. Vivid pictures illustrate the main events. Boxed text adds information about international reaction, and the life of Osama Bin Laden, and other topics throughout the book. Another box introduces readers to the concept of primary source material and a link to a relevant video. The content continues with "A Nation Responds, The Face of Terror," and "Swift Action." The immediate emergency responses at each site are described as well as government actions such as immediate grounding of planes, ongoing anti-terrorism precautions, and military initiatives in the Middle East. The "Cornerstone of Freedom" series seeks to highlight the best of our country and government, and inspire pride in the unique citizenship of the United States. This title in the series achieves those ends. Reviewer: Cindy K. Schofield
