Overview

Lin and Larry Pardey s first book, Cruising in Seraffyn is credited with launching 50,000 dreams. This third book in the Seraffyn series chronicles the three years spent exploring Ulysses wine-colored sea and clearly illustrates how they kept that dream afloat. Lin and Larry meander under sail, eastward from the rocky monolith of Gibraltar to the imposing stone ramparts of Malta. Along the way they share stories of the kaleidoscope of people who filled their days, from the naval officers who joined them for day races to the officials who helped turn them into smugglers (not drugs but a boat full of yeast, flour and vegetables and eventually twenty dollars worth of noodles!) But it is not just the shore side stories that will keep you intrigued, just as compelling are the clear concise descriptions of the days and nights they spent at sea. Lin s warm hearted story telling will draw you into her cruising life and show you the secrets that kept this well known couple wandering the watery reaches of the world for more than 40 years. Lin and Larry paid for their apparent freedom by working along the way delivering and repairing yachts, writing for magazines around the world. Seraffyn s Mediterranean Adventure, originally published in 1981, will inspire and entertain readers and show why the Pardey s motto Go Small, Go Simple, Go Now may be more relevant today than it was 30 years ago. For those who get hooked on the Seraffyn series, the good news is that it continues with Lin Pardey's latest book, Bull Canyon, a Boatbuilder, a Writer and other Wildlife which tells of building Seraffyn's big sister, Taleisin.

Editorial Reviews

Patience Wales
Read the book to know more about Lin and Larry; read the book to experience the Med; and by all means, take it along when you go there
Steve Rust
Adventure, Seraffyn's Mediterranean Adventure, and Seraffyn's Oriental Adventure are the best ever written on the cruising lifestyle. The go simple lifestyle may not appeal to everyone these days but their seamanship, interaction with the locals, love of the lifestyle, and storytelling make these timeless classics
The editor
The Pardeys weave a tale of people and anecdotes that makes for marvelous armchair cruising. If you ve read earlier works, you won t be disappointed. If you re new to the spell of the Pardeys, this will surely hook you.

Meet the Author

Lin and Larry Pardey have voyaged together for more than four decades, completing both eastabout and westabout circumnavigations on board their own self-built, engine-free cutters, Seraffyn and Taleisin. During their most recent east-to-west voyage, they sailed below four of the great Southern Capes, including Cape Horn. An avid racing sailor from the age of 17, Larry worked as first mate on the 140-ton, 85-foot schooner Double Eagle, voyaging on her to Hawaii and along the coast of Mexico before meeting Lin. Larry, along with Leslie Dyball, won first on handicap in the exceptionally stormy 1974 Round Britain two-handed race. Lin and Larry have delivered more than two dozen boats across oceans and raced on their own and others boats. To date, Lin has sailed almost 185,000 miles and Larry has accumulated over 200,000 miles at sea. In 1996, Larry received the International Oceanic Award from the Royal Institute of Navigation, presented by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, for meritorious voyaging using traditional navigation methods. During the same year, Lin received the Ocean Cruising Award for being the person who has done the most to foster and encourage ocean cruising in small craft and the practice of seamanship and navigation in all branches. In 2000, both were inducted into the Cruising World Hall of Fame. Lin and Larry s articles have appeared in: Cruising World, Sail, Good Old Boat, Wooden Boat, Practical Sailor, Yachting World, Yachting Monthly, Classic Boat (UK), Cruising Helmsman (Australia), Boating New Zealand, South African Yachting, Nautica Brazil, and Yacht (Germany). Their books and video programs have been published in the United States, England, and New Zealand; three have been translated into German. More recently Lin has written a best selling memoir called Bull Canyon, a boatbuilder, a writer and other Wildlife. the Pardey's now spend most of the year in New Zealand where they explore the islands of their adopted country on board their self built 29 foot cutter Taleisin.
