A Truly Disturbing Novella
I do recommend the full version over the free download. It is a much improved version and well worth the minimal price.
First. This is not a book for everyone. The warnings are real and if you are going to read this be prepared to be shocked and possibly sickened. But really what do you expect when reading about serial killers? They are a little more than New Jersey Housewives or Bad Biker Boys of Tough City. Serials exhibit the epitome of sociopathic behavior and if you find yourself completely comfortable with the characters you should probably seek psychiatric counseling yourself. These guys are the true monsters lurking in society, true evil, and at any given time there are a few out there operating undetected. We all fear them at some level whether for ourselves or our families and the news is always broadcasting another disappearance for us to ponder. This novella allows the reader a glimpse of the insides of their minds and in several stages of development; youth, teen and middle age (none seem to reach the geriatric stage). If you are prone to nightmares or obsessive behavior, if you are violent by nature or hang on to anger for a long time, if you tend to hold grudges: LEAVE THIS BOOK ALONE!!! THIS BOOK IS FOR WELL ADJUSTED ADULTS ONLY. If you take any psychiatric meds (see above). Lastly it goes without saying, don't share it with your teenager.
The authors walk a fine line exploring a serial killers twisted behavior without resorting to the pornographic, although they allude to a very real sexual drive found in almost all killers, and still manage to craft a gripping tale. To their credit they are able to show just how these creatures walk among us undetected. I have mixed feelings about humanizing serials; but without those traits they couldn't survive for long in society. Face it, we have managed to make ourselves safe from monsters with long fangs and claws - what is left must by definition be able to hide like a wisp of smoke. This is a truly exceptional story, I gave it four stars only because I reserve five for the shining stars of literature such as War and Peace or To Kill A Mockingbird - certainly this is a bit of cutting edge literature and while the snob crowd may disdain it for content the authors needed to be highly gifted to be even able to work with the subject. As for the people who wished to be able to unread it - have they never heard of closing the book? Reading an entire book and then pronouncing it disgusting? Please...
