Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
The ten short books in this collection are intended for young children who are "brand new" to reading. Each book contains eight pages with an illustration covering most of the space and a simple sentence at the bottom. Sesame Street characters engage in familiar activities. Big Bird and Abby clean house. They put away blocks and books; they sweep and mop the floor; Big Bird folds his blanket; Abby dusts pictures. The room is clean. Big Bird and Abby are dirty! Two other books feature Big Bird. He draws pictures with Oscar in one and dances with Grover in the other. Elmo's books show him dressing for a snowy day and trying on shoes with Big Bird. Cookie Monster leads a parade of Sesame Street characters in one book and arranges his bed for sleeping in another. Ernie follows tracks to discover a bird, a squirrel, a rabbit, and Bert. Ernie places objects such as a leaf, a stick, and a flower on the pond water. They all float. Bert's grapes sink. Abby flies and Elmo falls in the last book. Includes a certificate of achievement, an incentive chart with stickers, a make-your-own reader, and a parent/teacher guide. A good set of materials for parents to use with individual children. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
