Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Familiar characters from the television series fill the pages of this 1,300 word dictionary. As the introduction notes, the book has been designed to serve multiple purposes as a child grows and develops reading skills. Initially it is useful as a word book to help build vocabulary. It also works as a reading-readiness story book and as a first dictionary. The words are those that young children would normally encounter. Each section of the alphabet opens with the alphabet stretched across the page whre the upper and lower case versions of the letters are printed in a very large and brightly colored font. The letter "A" for example is being pulled through the air on a banner by an airplane. The letter "M" has a machine surrounding it. The word is printed in a bold font and a simple definition is presented. What is really useful is having the word presented in a sentence. In addition, for kids reading on their own there is more information in each of the cartoon panels. It is a great way to learn about the world around us and to have fun. What is not there and will need to be provided by parents and caregivers is pronunciation for the words. Parts of speech also not included can be taught later. The book will keep kids busy for many, many days and might be a great choice for a car trip. In addition there is a bonus packaged with the book—a CD with some sing along tunes such as "Elmo's Rap Alphabet," "Off to School" and the "Cookie Rhyming Song." 2004, Random House, Ages 3 to 8.
