Overview

This disc collects some of the best performances from AOL Music's Sessions@AOL, an online music program on which artists perform in small studios or rehearsal spaces. The compilation includes rare recordings from chart-topping acts such as Coldplay (a stripped-down version of "The Scientist"), Avril Lavigne (a pre-Let Go performance of "Mobile"), Lisa Marie Presley (an acoustic version of "Sinking In"), and Alicia Keys (a previously unreleased cover of Donny Hathaway's "Someday We'll All Be Free"). The enhanced CD offers access to bonus material online, including video outtakes from these recording sessions.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Even though Sessions @ AOL has the ring of something you might see in your e-mail account records, it's actually a collection of performances recorded for the ISP giant. Since America Online is such a big corporation, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the artists included here are fairly mainstream, but most of the performances are intimate and immediate. The collection's first two tracks embody both of these traits: Coldplay's ubiquitous "The Scientist" finds new life here in a hushed performance that sounds even more genuine than the version that ended up on A Rush of Blood to the Head, while Missy Elliott's equally omnipresent "Work It" is even more rubbery and sassy. Lil' Kim's "The Jump Off" follows suit; in fact, hip-hop provides many of the highlights on Sessions @ AOL, particularly Nappy Roots (featuring Jazze Pha)'s brash "Awnaw" and the Roots' lush "Break You Off." Likewise, Alicia Keys' soulful cover of "Someday We'll All Be Free" and Wayne Wonder's "No Letting Go" are also standout tracks, although the way Wonder closes his performance by singing "AOL is all of that!" is more than a little cheesy. However, the collection's more rock-oriented tracks don't fare quite as well: Avril Lavigne's "Mobile" and Michelle Branch's "Are You Happy Now" aren't among their best songs and sound like so much post-Alanis Morissette whining, while New Found Glory's "My Friends Over You" gets off to a slightly sloppy start. The album's singer/songwriters have better luck; Jewel's strangely charming mock teen pop "Intuition" and Gavin DeGraw's "Follow Through" are two of the more solid performances here. Since it tries to pack in so many different styles and sounds, it makes sense that Sessions @ AOL is somewhat scattered, but there are enough good performances here that fans of the artists included on it shouldn't be disappointed.
