The best part about this book are the number of photos. They illustrate very well the use of props in photography and reinforce what the author writes in the text. She gives a lot of great suggestions for how, when, and how many props to use. She also covers the safety of props which is very important for everyone involved.

"Set the Scene: Use Props to Create Memorable Portrait Phot

"Set the Scene: Use Props to Create Memorable Portrait Photography" provides an interesting and fresh perspective on the art of photography. It includes many unique ideas on how to turn what would otherwise be a standard and sometimes mundane photo shoot into something unique and original. If done properly, the images created will leave the customer with memorable photos they will enjoy looking at and displaying for years to come. Tracy Dorr does an excellent job providing details on how to create a successful photo shoot using props. I like that she stresses the importance of planning ahead in order to be prepared so as not to waste anyone's time during the process.
Dorr provides many excellent ideas for portrait photography themes. For example, my attention was drawn to the "First Birthday Cake" theme (pg. 76-77). Having a baby eat a piece of his or her first birthday cake and get really messy is certainly a well-known tradition. Many parents take a few pictures of the event at the birthday party, but then go to a studio to have standard pictures taken of their son or daughter holding a giant number 1 block -- boring! Why not have a first birthday cake photo shoot instead as Dorr suggests? I feel this is so much more original and memorable and if you plan ahead and take her advice into consideration, you will provide parents with an invaluable keepsake of a time in their child's life that goes by so quickly. That is just one of the many original ideas Tracy Dorr provides in her book.
