This funny and moving novel juxtaposes selected events in WW II with the rebellion of youth in the late 1960s. One spring day in Vienna, Graff, an earnest young Austrian student who has just failed his exams, meets Siggy, a wildly eccentric motorcycle mechanic and philosopher. Together they roam the countryside astride a 700cc Royal Enfield racer. Lovely long-limbed Gallen soon joins them. Moving rapidly from incident to incident in the best picaresque tradition, the drama climaxes in "the great zoo bust" as all forms of beast--including human--break free.
