Seussical [2000 Original Broadway Cast]

Barnes & Noble - David Cohen
It might shock fans of John Grisham and Stephen King, but America's most widely read author of all time may be Dr. Seuss (Ted Geisel, 1904-91). And now, the creator of the Cat in the Cat, Horton the Elephant, and the Grinch is the toast of Broadway with Seussical: The Musical, the most fantastical and "stoo-mendous" hit in ages. Producer Phil Ramone has captured every delicious drop of whimsy in this 100 percent faithful cast recording. Producer Phil Ramone has captured every delicious drop of whimsy in this 100 percent faithful cast recording. A superb ensemble featuring David Shiner, Kevin Chamberlin, and the sassy-throated Sharon Wilkins is no less stunning than the amazing creations that populated Seuss' preposterous imagination. Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty have seamlessly melded their words and music to the Good Doctor's world, brewing an ear-popping gumbo that includes touches of Latin, pop, vaudeville, swing, gospel, and funk.Seussical is simply a magical listening experience for children of all ages.
All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's first three Broadway musicals, Once on This Island, My Favorite Year, and Ragtime, each suggested by its subject an appropriate style of music to employ, and to a large extent, they followed the material, writing island music, 1950s-style pop, and ragtime as required. For their fourth musical, Seussical, based on the children's stories of Dr. Seuss, "We found there were no limits to what kind of music we could use," they wrote in a note contained in the booklet to the original Broadway cast album. As a result, "The score emerged as a Seussian gumbo of musical styles" that ended up including elements of Latin, swing, gospel, R&B, funk, Spike Jones-style comedy music, vaudeville, and synthesizer pop, among other things. It sounds like Flaherty also may have recycled music from earlier shows, with "Amayzing Mayzie" having the Caribbean feel of Once on This Island and "A Day for the Cat in the Hat" sounding like something from Ragtime. The familiarity of the styles makes the music seem like a series of pastiches, however, from the pop
ock of the "Overture" to the Aretha Franklin/Patti LaBelle impersonation Sharon Wilkins indulges in during "Biggest Blame Fool" and elsewhere, concluding with the swing sound of "Green Eggs and Ham." Far more accomplished are the more traditional pop theater songs, particularly "Alone in the Universe." But if Flaherty's music does not impress, Ahrens' lyrics do. Occasionally borrowing directly from Seuss, she writes songs that capture the zany style of the books. Though she and Flaherty have deliberately undertaken disparate projects, the element that unites them is the warmheartedness of their tone. Ahrens always approaches her material with sympathy and sweetness, which makes a children's show a good project for her. In their libretto, she and Flaherty have not entirely solved the problem of knitting together a group of separate stories, so the show is episodic. Just as the music lacks unity, so does the plot. But individual parts work well, and it's Ahrens' lyrics, particularly the affecting song of devotion "All for You," and some of the performances, notably those of Kevin Chamberlin as Horton the Elephant, Michele Pawk as Mayzie LaBird, and Janine LaManna as Gertrude McFuzz, that give the show its best moments.

    amazingly great !!!

The music is totaly awsome, the show, i haven't seen it yet but i really want to . . . the only problem is that the show has been performed soo many times at soo many places, that i fear that the true brodway version is lost, if that makes sense !! " For I have wing,& I can fly, around the moon,& beyond the stars. And one day soon,I know there'll you'll be,one small voice in the universe, one true friend in the universe, who believes in me ! "

    This ain't mother goose!

This cd gives you a look at the musical world created around some of Dr. Seuss's best know books such as Horton Hears a Who, McEligot's Pool, and, of course, Green Eggs and Ham. With a plot line that follows Horton Hears a Who, this cd is fun and silly. After listening to the music and being in a production, I recommend seeing a production and enjoying the cd.

Seussical is Fabulous, 98 and 3 Quarters % Guaranteed!!

Seussical is one of the best conceived musicals in quite a while. It's not that difficult of a concept: Dr. Seuss and his works in one big musical. Brilliantly thought of and written by Lynn Aherns and Stephen Flaherty, this show has all aspects of a hit: great music, great cast, and everything else that's great in between. A wonderful tribute to the Doctor of Rhyme himself if there ever was one.

    Anything's Possible

When our school decided to do this for our spring musical, I was so excited. The music is fun and makes me feel happy :), especially "Anything's Possible" sung by Jojo. "Amazing Mayzie," as the title says, really is an amazing song. The salsa vibe to it makes you want to dance. Everyone of all ages should listen to this, but use it sparingly. When it's put on repeat, you tend to want it to break.

    awesome soundtrack!!

I think most of the songs on this soundtrack are awesome! Some of my favorites are "Biggest Blame Fool", "Notice Me Horton", "It's Possible", and the "Amayzing Mayzie" and "Amayzing Gertrude" songs. I don't like the song "Havin a Hunch". My school's working on a production of this and I'm a whoville resident. I definately recommend this soundtrack.

    Splendiferous!

I had the pleasure of seeing a recent regional production of Seussical, and I fell in love. I usually like darker musicals a la Sweeney Todd, Les Mis, etc, but I was very drawn to Suessical for its genuine display of emotion. Though it is a musical that keeps children very much in mind (it is Dr. Suess), it also extremely touching, even bittersweet. Horton and Mazie tug my heart. I purchased the soundtrack, and I'm crazy for it.

    Terrible

I auditioned for this and I bought the cast recording to learn the songs. I have to say it was terrible. I ended up quitting because the show itself was so stupid

    FUN!

Right from the title, you know that this recording is going to be full of fun. It’s a blend of Dr. Suess stories including The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I think it was really smart that Lynn Ahren, who wrote most of the lyrics, chose not use the exact Dr. Suess lyrics. Rather, she opted to write her own while still maintaining the essence of Suess. Ahren was certainly successful in her task. Most all of the CD is filled with fun and energy starting with “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!” David Shiner is introduced as the Cat in the Hat in this first song and he does the role justice, creating the character and bringing it to life. Kevin Chamberlain, as Horton the Elephant, does a spectacular job. He has a beautiful voice that just touches your heart when he sings “Alone in the Universe.” Overall, Suessical The Musical is a clean and enjoyable album that both kids and parents will enjoy.

    Seussical - the ultimate musical!

I love this show! I saw it on Broadway during the previews, and I loved it! Kevin Chamberlin and the others were so great! The music is as good as The Producers, Urinetown, and Sweet Smell of Success. My favorites are "Oh, The Thinks You Can Think," "Biggest Blame Fool," "A Day For The Cat In The Hat," "Anything's Possible," "The Military," "Alone In the Universe," "How Lucky You Are," "Solla Sollew," and "Havin' A Hunch." I can't wait to see the tour company!
