Overview

Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes (467 BC) is the last play of a tetralogy. It tells how Eteocles, son of Oedipus and the ruler of Thebes, defends the city from attack by his brother Polynices and six other heroes, and how he and Polynices fight and kill each other, so fulfilling the curse on their house. This major edition of the play provides an independent text, introduction, and full scale commentary. The introduction provides a thoroughly comprehensive overview of the work. It considers the evidence for the other plays in the tetralogy, the interpretation of this play, and the history of the text. Each section of the play also has a short introduction of its own. The commentary deals fully with the style and language of the play; it also draws on literature, art, and inscriptions to illuminate the work and set it in the context of Greek culture and society, showing the conventions that Aeschylus has used and altered. There is illuminating discussion of dramatic form and of the exploitation of religion and ritual.
