This novel is part of an Edgar Award winning series about a wise man (based on a real historical figure) named Judge Ooka and his adopted son, sixteen-year-old Seikei. The judge is a figure of great renown and a spokesman for the Shogun while Seikei is a young Samurai. According to the book notes at the end, Judge Ooka was the Sherlock Holmes of his time, seventeenth century Japan. These protagonists are confronted with real mysteries. In this case, a dead man turns up in a rice field during the planting festival. His back is heavily tattooed with what looks like a brightly colored treasure map. But the judge soon realizes that the dead man carries only part of the puzzle and to save other lives, they must find the other six parts of the map and stop an evil family from taking over the shogunate with muskets. Many adventures follow, including more dead men and a sinister ninja, along with court intrigue and betrayal. This book is for young readers who like quick paced mysteries and who would find the cultural details about ancient Japan interesting. Reviewer: Myrna Dee Marler

Meet the Author

Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler are historians and authors of over sixty books, both fiction and nonfiction, mostly for young readers. They are the authors of the well-loved American Family Album series, including The Japanese American Family Album, which was named a Carter G. Woodson Honor Book in 1997.

The Society for School Librarians International chose their book Showa: The Era of Hirohito for a best book award in 1991, and they have been cited for excellence by the Library of Congress, the Parents' Choice Foundation, Bank Street College, the International Reading Association, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and the New York Public Library. The Hooblers make their home in New York City. They have one daughter and are active in community affairs.
