“A high-octane mix of modern adventure and ancient secrets, The Colossus Rises is Lerangis’s most gripping work yet. Young readers will love this story. I can’t wait to see what’s next in the Seven Wonders series!”
Children's Literature - Toni Jourdan
Three friends, Jack, Aly and Cass, find themselves in an adventure to save their own lives. They are “select” and all three possess a mark on their head that proves their genetic abnormality. These extraordinary thirteen-year-olds must locate and bring together the seven Loculi from Atlantis or they will not live past the age of fourteen. (The seven Loculi are spheres holding seven different components that work together to keep everything in balance.) The three friends live and attend classes at the Karai Institute. Jack believes his mother died six years earlier; or were she and his father is caught up in scientific research? Now their dear Professor Bhegad has been injured. The evil Massa locate the Institute and burn it down and the friends must travel to the Mausoleum at Halicernassus for the hidden Loculi of healing. The Massa are also searching for the Loculi. In fact, their good friend, Marco, has switched sides and now works for the Massa. They locate the Loculus of Flight and the Loculus of Invisibility, but Jack cannot seem to hear the song of Heptakiklos that will help them locate the Loculus. So they must take a side journey to visit the Great Queen Artemisia. Led by a zombie who guards the Mausoleum, they travel through the Underworld of Bo’gloo (Hades) to the River Nostalgikos. The River feeds on their memories; each must face their worst fear; and one must sacrifice his own life. The third book in the “Seven Wonders” series continues this fast-paced story of friendship, adventure, history, and mythology, plus world travel. It is jam packed and written smartly to keep the reader on their toes. It is best to read the first two books before this one and definitely worth tackling the series. Reviewer: Toni Jourdan; Ages 8 to 12.

The Seven Wonders series continues as Jack McKinley and his friends try to save themselves and, while they're at it, the world. Jack, Cass, Marco and Aly are Selects, born with genetic abnormalities that give them superpowers but which will kill them by age 14 unless they can find seven magical Atlantean Loculi hidden in the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In the first two volumes, they raised the Colossus of Rhodes and found ancient Babylon in a parallel world, and now they have the Loculus of Flight and the Loculus of Invisibility. They are on their way to Turkey in search of the Loculus of Healing in the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. The series so far doesn't match the Percy Jackson tales for characterization or for the building of believable mythic worlds. Nevertheless, the cinematic plotting, the mystery of Jack's mother's death (or disappearance?) and the friendship among friends trying to grow into their powers without dying in the process will satisfy fans of the several similar fantasy-adventure series available. This series, though, is unique in staking out its turf in Atlantis and the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, doling out one wonder per volume. An exciting-enough excursion into a world full of wonders. (Adventure. 8-12)
