Overview

Week 1: Meena was babysitting Trace Clayton, the son of her parents' best friends, when a fire broke out in the living room. Meena was able to save Trace, but nothing more. No one really knows how it happened. Except Meena.

SEVENS is the story of seven weeks in the lives of seven teenagers in Saratoga Springs, New York. As the first book opens, the seven main characters stand on the edge. They are facing things that force them to confront their pasts and their very uncertain futures. At first their struggles seem unrelated, but soon the connections between the characters begin to emerge.

Over the course of these seven books, readers will be brought into the lives of these teens. They will share their struggles, feel their pain, and celebrate their successes -- all the while gaining glimpses of the single unifying event that irrevocably links these seven lives. It was an event that affected them all differently, but changed each of them forever.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
With this first book in a riveting seven-book series about seven apparently unconnected teens, author Scott Wallens delivers a hard-hitting story of complex relationships and mental anguish.

In Week 1: Shattered, we're introduced to seven teens, all of whom are strangely linked by one dark event that continues to plague each. The story begins with a dream of wheelchair-bound Peter, in which his six peers, as youngsters, desperately call on him for aid. Peter's dream is eerily similar to one being experienced by Week 1's primary character, Meena, a sporty girl who inexplicably descends into smoking, drugs, and self-abuse. The story rockets to its explosive conclusion when her father's vile best friend comes into the picture, and Meena makes a startling confession. In between, we meet the other main characters: Danny, who is battling an addiction to medication; Josh and Jeremy, whose friendship is about to change drastically; Jane; Karyn; and Reed.

Week 1 is absorbing and observant, a powerful launch to this dramatic series. Meena's struggles with her inner demons are brought shockingly to life, and the other characters' stories are equally potent. The next six books promise to be as good as the first, and readers will be itching to delve deeper into these teens' lives. (Matt Warner)

School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up-Pete has nightmares about six childhood friends who are begging him to help them. Just as in real life, he is bound to a wheelchair and can't assist them as they scream out his name. Meena has begun to drink, smoke, and use drugs, and she stays to herself most times. What her friends and family don't know is that she is being molested by a family friend. Danny is fighting against using the drugs his psychiatrist has prescribed to "calm down." Jeremy has good looks and an attractive girlfriend, but his encounters with Josh are causing him to feel something else deep inside. Jane is considered a "brainiac," since she is obsessed with good grades. A terrible incident happened seven years ago to these teens that is causing all of them to experience nightmares, and the eerie aftereffects are spilling into their waking lives. This first installment in a seven-book series grips readers instantly. Several of the seven friends are introduced and highlighted as they experience real anguish and pain in their own dramas. The author gives subtle clues as to the pivotal event, but doesn't let the audience off even as the last word is read. Other cliff-hanging series, such as Francine Pascal's "Fearless" (Pocket), have the same intensity, but the situations in "Sevens" are achingly more realistic. Teens will clamor for each new installment to find out what happened to these engaging individuals.-Jana R. Fine, Clearwater Public Library System, FL Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    hopelessness

I am an adult who works with young people, and enjoy reading young adult books for pleasure and to keep up with what's out there. Wallens does a great job with keeping the reader in suspense as to what the event is that connects the 7 main characters, but the hopelessness I felt after reading the book caused me to rate it only a 3. I would not suggest this book because it doesn't resolve the situations that the characters are going through. Those issues may be resolved in later books, but to leave any of these unresolved/without hope, could cause those who are struggling with some of the same issues to become more depressed and try some unhealthy ways to relieve that depression. True hope only comes through our Lord Jesus Christ, and even if the author doesn't believe this, I feel that he could at least offer some positive ways to deal with the issues in the book.

    My opinon....

I thought this first book of the series was very interesting for teens my age. It left us wondering what would happen to not only Meena, but to the other characters we meet. It is filled with suspense until the very end. I immediatly wanted to start reading the second book after I completed the first one. I can't wait to find out what that dark secret was that the seven best friends have been torn apart by. I highly recommend it for that teenager who can't seem to find anything interesting these days!

    Awesome Book

This book is so great. I love how descriptive the author is of all their feelings and problems. I felt so bad for Meena. I can't wait for the next book. I'm really looking foward to finding out what Meena does about Steven and what Jeremey is gonna do about his kiss he shared with Josh.

    Scary

I can't believe that Meena went through all that. It's so scary that someone's family friend could do that to someone. I absolutlly loved the book. I can't wait to get the next weeks for me to read. It left me with so much suspence!!!

    AWSOME

well...this is the first series of books i have read so far that has nothing to do with supernatural stuff or sci fi stuff...and i gatta say its really good...it reminds me just like a soap (in wich i watch two saops) but Meena, Danny, Jeramy, and Peter's stories withing Shattered really brought out their characters and i have every intention on reading the other six

    read it people

It was kind of confusing in the beginning because it introduced so many new people. It was hard to keep track of who they were. But it got easier to follow as you kept reading and it's a really good book. I like how it follows all of the people so you get different points of view on the situation. anyway it's a really good book and i reccomend it to everyone.
