In the introduction to this refreshing beauty guide, Brous assures teens that they don't have to read How to be Gorgeous from beginning to end; they can skip around at will. She's right: The lively graphics, charts and quizzes make this tutorial an entirely painless way to beauty. Beautifying advice about hair care, sun protection, makeup removers, and nail biting is packaged in wonderfully diverting ways. For example, who could beat the seven suggestions for changing your hair without chopping it? Or offer more succinct ways to beat breakouts than The Zit Files? Intoduction

Lots of people think that beauty editors are born with total beauty knowledge,Well, not me! In fact, when I first started reading seventeen, I was completely clueless about beauty. I couldn't wait to flip open a new issue-to see what my favorite models and celebs were doing with their hair and makeup-, I wanted to learn the new beauty secrets and test-drive all the cool hair and makeup looks. I tied my ponytail with Saran Wrap (way before the Scrunchie was invented) and dotted on faux freckles with eyeliner (don't ask!). My makeovers may not have looked too magical back then, but I certainly had fun.

Now, after all my years as seventeen's beauty director, I've discovered the most important beauty secret of all. Beauty isn't about being trendy or bout-looking like your favorite celeb. Beauty is about experimentation—explori the possibilities and finding what looks best on you. And once you decide what makes you feel beautiful, it's about learning how to create that look and really play it up.

But don't get me wrong. I'm not saying you have to stick to the 14 right-for-you" look that-you discovered last year, or last month, or even last week. As your style evolves and changes, your beauty look should morph along with it. Experimenting is what's fun.

What definitely isn't fun is stressing out about your frizzy or flat hair, the epic zit in the middle of your forehead, or your bushy eyebrows. If you're anything like I was, you have dozens of questions about your hair, your skin, your makeup-what to use, how to apply it, what works, and what doesn't.

That's where this book comes in. I've crammed it with all the crucialbeauty tips and tricks seventeen has gathered over the years. I've talked to all the prosfrom makeup artists to models, from celeb hairstylists to skin specialists. What's more, I've packed this book with the answers to your most-asked questions, and even tossed in tons of cool beauty tips from seventeen readers just like you.

You don't need to read this book from beginning to end-just pick it up and start wherever you like. Read whatever interests you that day, whether you're trying to create sexy, smoky eye makeup or just wondering how to push back your cuticles. Keep your copy wherever you stash your beauty stuff and break it open in case of an emergency. Use it as a reference guide when you're throwing a spa party for your friends or experimenting with hair color for the first time. But most of all, use it as a beginning-a starting place to explore the endless possibilities in getting gorgeous.
