Overview

A cutting-edge naval warfare thriller from the award-winning author of 'Sea of Shadows'

THE WORLD HAS FORGOTTEN THE TRUE NATURE OF TERROR. IT'S ABOUT TO BE REMINDED.

A military revolt in southeastern Russia puts a former hard-line Soviet leader in command of a ballistic missile submarine and its arsenal of nuclear weapons. His goal: re-ignite the communist revolution, and recapture the might and glory of the fallen Soviet Union. Without warning, Russia, Japan, and the United States become hostages in a scheme of international nuclear blackmail. When the warheads start falling and people begin dying, no one can pretend that it's a bluff.

As the earth rushes toward extinction, a lone U.S. Navy warship must penetrate the Siberian ice pack to destroy the submarine before it can destroy the world.

It may already be too late.

A rare insight into World seldom ventured or understood, Americas surface Navy, tough, sophisticated and deadly.

As a longtime Clancy and Ludlum fan, any thrillers I read have to have multiple random elements to keep the pages turning. Action, smart tech, believeable characters, and one undeniably plausible premise....good stuff.

The technical information and explanations were very good, but I thought the strategic/political stuff was quite weak. For example, at what point was it shown that parking all subs was a good idea or that they "had no choice"? When did they prove that this was not a USSR plot to get them to do just that? I'm sorry, I know the author needed an excuse to have his adventure make sense, but that side just seemed very lame to me.

What a wonderful book. It was engaging and exciting. It is so refreshing that Mr. Edwards depicts the Captain and the other sailors as real people and puts them in a positive light. In a time when people want to put down our real heros, he puts them where they belong

This book and (series) should warm the heart of every Destroyer sailor. The Surface Warfare Navy finaly gets a piece of the "Techno Thriller" action. Edwards dispenses with the "filler" of personaliity conflicts, love interests, etc. and keeps to the theme of saving the world from nuclear war. Neat thing is he doesn't stop the nukes from flying in the nick of time like Clancy et al.

Central Texas Texan A very interesting techno thriller. Bought this book on a whim a couple months ago. Just now got around to reading it. Sure am glad I did read this absorbing book. I spent 8 years in the Navy in the 70's. This book really represents how the Navy really does train and turn over responsibility of weapons and decision making to enlisted personel. It shows that most officers are really decent people too. Exciting almost to the point of foregoing sleep to continue reading every day. Enjoyed this book from cover to cover.
