My First Choice as a beginner

After years of envy, I decided to try and my hand at becoming one of those cool enviable crafty gals. I work in a bookstore and for two weeks I spent my breaks looking at the sewing books and magazines for the perfect beginner guide with projects I would be interested in making (cute bags and hip clothes - there are a lot of books with really uninspiring, ugly clothes, so buyer beware!). This was the book I settled on!! It's probably the next best thing to a real life class. Debbie's language is friendly and witty, and there are photos and diagrams of all the little machine parts and stiches. What was quite helpful to me as a 'real beginner' was the section on setting up a sewing area - getting a table, chair, lighting, etc... and what tools are really essential. This book has absolutely everything a beginner could need, including nice patterns! Also don't forget to check out 'MAKE' craft magazine for neat projects unlike many other crafts magazines.

    Great book for beginners

I am just beginning to sew and am finding this book extremely helpful. I had read the original manual for my sewing machine and also looked up web sites, but it wasn't until I read the first few chapters of this book that I finally understood and could successfully thread my sewing machine. This book is divided into chapters explaining different aspects of sewing, how the machine works, the differences in fabric, and very cute patterns. I think this book is great for beginners!

    Great beginner sewing book

As a sewing novice, I was looking for a book that would help me to better understand the parts of the machine and sewing basics. This book has been a tremendous help not only in breaking down sewing mechanics but also in de-mystifying the sewing process. It includes wonderful illustrations and the author manages to incorporate a little humor and some anecdotes to make it an interesting read. This book will be a permanent book in my library. I recommend it for individuals who are new to sewing or those looking for a refresher.

    Great Book

Most sewing books read like textbooks; this book is the exception. Great detailed instructions and a lot of humor set this book apart. What a pleasure! Highly recommend.

    Great beginner's guide

This is a fun, easy read and has me itching to start my first project. The book provides the exact information I need to get started - tools, fabric types, how to read a pattern, etc. The only info not included is more advanced stuff that I really don't want or need to know until I have some sewing under my belt. The projects in the book are cool and are rated one to three spools to help you start easy and progress as you build skills.

    A reviewer

I have many how to sew books, but this one had simple instruction in easy terms. The patterns were cute and easy too. I got the feeling I could call her up and ask if I had a question!!

A definite MUST for any beginner!

I bought a sewing machine recently, for round 2 of trying to learn the art of sewing (first one was about 10 years ago, and a dismal failure). I have had this book for about 3 hours now, and have only been reading it for about 15 minutes, and I have learned more usefu information and gained a better understanding for the craft than I ever had before. It even demystified some of the garbled information from the manufacturer's instruction manual for me!

The author writes in a conversational manner, and everything in this book is very well organized, illustrated and linked to useful resources where available. I would recommend to anyone who is trying to learn to sew!!
