Meet the Author

Wendy Mullin is a self-taught seamstress whose hip clothing line Built by Wendy has found fans amongst musicians, artists, and actors such as the Beastie Boys, Natalie Portman, Drew Barrymore, and Pharrell. She was tapped by Wrangler to reinvigorate their label and created the new Wrangler 47 line. Originally from suburban Chicago, she currently lives and works in New York City.

Eviana Hartman is an editor at Nylon magazine, and was formerly a fashion writer for Vogue and Teen Vogue. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

    Great Guide

    This is a really well-designed book, and it really gives you great starting points towards making your own clothes. Some women feel the patterns are too small, but not only does she explain how to customize patterns and adjust them to make them bigger or smaller to fit your frame, but honestly- being too obese to fit into normal sizes is not the book's fault. The majority of women can easily use the patters and if you need to add or remove inches she tells you how to re-draw them quite easily and even how to make your own patterns. Great book.

    Love Love Love

    The target audience for this book is young, novice sewers, but even experienced sewers will find the book useful and full of design ideas. Mullin starts at the beginning, but doesn't bore the reader, who really wants to get started sewing and designing her own clothes, with too much detail. Essentially, she identifies essential sewing room tools, necessary techniques, and she even guides the reader through their first sewing machine purchase. The bulk of the book is spent outlining ways the reader can design her own, unique clothes that she really wants to wear. It is full of ideas, and very inspirational. I have been sewing for about thirty years, and found the book extremely inspirational.

    Hip book for first time clothes makers!

    This book is really useful. It comes with three patterns-skirt,pants,shirt. Each pattern is sectioned with advice about appropriate fabrics for your project and ideas to modify the patterns in degrees of difficulty. The book has a great instructional front section and advice about what equipment to buy, and ways to build a home sewing area, even for small spaces. It's a great book. I searched for a long time for a book that would help me make clothes I would actually want to wear, and aimed at a younger generation rather than older ladies.

    Wish that I hadn't bought the book

    This is a good book for a high school home economics class but not a good book for someone who wants more than basic instruction. One poster claimed that this book explains how to adjust patterns--it does not. This person was either reviewing another book or has no clue what is involved when you adjust a pattern. The book has good ideas but no substance. Unless you are an absolute beginning sewer, buy another book.

    Good info, but disappointed at the patterns

    Good tips, but I am disappointed because I cannot use the free patterns that were included the are only for average size and average height women.
