Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Writes Deckert, "The goal of all plus-size design is to emphasize your positive attributes and modify or distract from those you feel are less desirable." Deckert is herself a plus-sized woman and a custom clothier with more than 30 years of sewing experience. Given that most clothing manufacturers have never learned to design attractive, well-fitting clothes for women who wear a size 14 or larger, the woman who wants to achieve style beyond size must sew her own clothes. This book will make that task less formidable. Illustrated with photos of plus-sized models, including the author herself, this book emphasizes analyzing pattern designs based on individual figure proportions and working effectively with fabric color and texture. Major sections of the book are devoted to tools for plus-sized sewing (including instructions for making an inexpensive personal paper-tape dress form), choosing fabric, taking measurements, "sizing-up" commercial patterns for the plus-sized figure, and modifying patterns to make clothing more comfortable and durable. Enthusiastically recommended for all public libraries with sewing and costuming collections. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

    I LOVE THIS BOOK

I've been 'big' all my adult life and I have sewed all my adult life. For my girls and myself but nothing ever fit to my liking. This book tells me why. I'll be using Barbara's information for the rest of my sewing days.

A Must for Plus Sized Sewing

Ms. Deckert is to be commended for tackling the sensitive subject of sewing for and dressing the plus-sized woman. This book is worth the purchase price for the chapters on pattern alteration alone. Actual photographs showing the alterations of pattern piecess are provided. I gave this book four stars because some of ladies modeling the examples of plus-sized clothing were not dressed in the appropriate colors or prints that could have easily camouflaged major figure flaws.

Thank goodness - beauty for big women!

as a big, beautiful woman, I try very hard to look my best, and believe me, I love fashion. There aren't many shops in my area for large women, and mail order stuff is so ify. Ive sewed for years, but as I got bigger, I had a tougher time with the fit. This book lets me keep on sewing for my body as it is now. The author explaines how to fix the pattern and make the outfit fit right. I love the clothes shown in the pictures.
