Overview

Sex, Boys and & You is a book for women-children: girls age 11 to 19 on their way to being strong, giving, powerful grownups. Author Joni Arredia wants her young readers to learn to use their muliebrity: the power of womanhood. After she found muliebrity, Joni shared her journey with the world in her first book "Muliebrity: Qualities of a Woman". Now she wants to pass her wisdom down to a new generation of women. If 12-year-olds can find thier Muliebrity now, instead of in thier 30s, how bright the world would be from their glowing smiles. Sex, Boys & You shows girls how to combine their own inner strengths, with a strong healthy package to help them carry out their wildest and most profound dreams. It addresses issues all teens are thinking about: sex, dating, feeling fat, feeling ugly, fearing loneliness. And a few that might surprise spirituality, excercise, and posture. Sex, Boys & You seeks to teach and prepare, but more than that, it is about inspiring the energy to take a dream and turn it into reality. Joni talks about fighting the forces and people that can damage or destroy dreams, and how girls can pick up the pieces if they've been hurt. Joni's gentle, cradling style gets right to the heart of the matter -without getting "in your face." Her voice is a beacon of hope to all women, even those still in training. You can hear her ever-present smile on every page.

Editorial Reviews

Teen Magazine
This book's not just about the birds and the bees -it's about becoming the person you want to be and not letting sex and other social stuff stand in the way of your dreams. You'll find out how to boost your personal power and make life choices you'll love living with. (February 199)
The Childrens Bookwatch
Sex, Boys & You teaching the importance of tapping into the individual stregnths to achieve the life of a young girl's wildest dreams. Joni Arredia helps girls ages 11 to 19 see where the opposite sex should fit into their lives, and how to get him out if they want to. She looks at overcoming feeling fat or ugly, too stupid or too smart, and how to banish fears of loneliness. She reminds girls of the power of prayer and the importance of their individual spirituality.
School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-Arredia acts as a sympathetic mentor to younger teens in this empowering, feel-good book. She describes her own experiences as a sexually abused child and explains how she overcame feelings of shame, stigma, and self-hatred to become a happy and fulfilled woman. The tone is casual but also thoughtful and deeply caring, and, above all, extremely positive and practical. For example, the author discusses why and when to say "NO," how to like yourself when you don't look anything like the models in Seventeen magazine, how to figure out your strengths and have the discipline to work toward your goals, and how to develop healthy relationships with boys. The sections dealing with sexuality are not explicit. Good solid advice for any young teen and a fine addition to any collection.-Susan R. Farber, Ardsley Public Library, NY
