One of the world's top male models-working for Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, among others-Hulse describes being a "star athlete" as a teenager, before going to Cornell, where he modeled nude for art classes; discovered his first guru, Maharaj Ji; and cultivated his passion for surfing. Once he realized that modeling paid better than carpentry, he commissioned a portfolio, signed with an agency and worked every booking he was offered. Soon, top photographers like Bruce Weber were hiring him regularly. While meditation helped him stay centered, and running and surfing kept him in shape, his sexual appetite was uncontrollable; he bedded countless models. Then he ran into a woman he'd met years before, and they both knew Hulse had to stop womanizing for their relationship to work. With newfound trust, the two married and had children together-an oddly conventional ending to an otherwise exotic life story. Hulse's unabashed kiss-and-tell, plus all his photos, add up to a surprisingly entertaining memoir. (Aug.)

Recently, I read the book, 'Sex, Love and Fashion: A Memoir Of A Male Model', written by Bruce Hulse. Hulse was one of the first male supermodels, whose illustrious career has spanned twenty five plus years. The book was initially an impulse decision for me, and I didn't really know whether or not I would ever get around to reading it. I am very glad that I did.
I started reading the book during bike workouts, secretly hoping that through some sort of osmosis, I might become as attractive and fit as him, just by reading his words during gym time. (I must say I kind of miss my gym buddy!) Almost immediately, I found myself becoming attached to this man, who through very honest and emotional words, describes his life from the humble beginnings as a star basketball player, to becoming a lifeguard, and on to his hugely successful career as a model.
Bruce Hulse talks candidly about growing up with a mother who suffered from depression (but who humorously named her four children in alphabetical order) and how he battled the same issues during his youth. He gives you a glance into the world of 'beach bums', where you almost view Avalon as a heaven on Earth, where all of your problems are swept out with the tide. Then finally, by a few twists of fate, he gets his start into the modeling game at the age of 30. (Yet another fact that I find quite impressive!)
Then comes the women...

While chockful of entertaining and true incidents involving many of the 1970's super models, fashion designers, and photographers, this book is a touching and inspirational read because the author managed to escape a life of vapid excess to become, eventually, not only beautiful on the outside, but the inside, as well.

Such a fun and entertaining read as you indulge into Bruce Hulses life as a beach rat, turned student, struggling model to a supermodel! read about his deep search for spirituality, love and a soulmate. Stories as both men and women can relate to. Read it and pass it on!

Despite attempts by publicity hounds to market this memoir as scandalous dishing about celebrity hook-ups, Bruce Hulse¿s ¿Sex, Love, and Fashion¿ transcends such banal, tabloid-obsessed drivel. Much more than a book about abs, beautiful girls, and big-name designers, this book is an exploration of one man¿s soul as it journeys from home to confusion to hope to despair to love. This books is not a book about fashion any more than, say, ¿Blood Meridian¿ is a book about cowboys this is nothing less than a book about the universal quest to prove oneself worthy of true love. A capable, and at times quite eloquent, narrator, Hulse describes himself and his beautiful but turbulent life with a candor and sincerity that evoke in turn charm and heartbreak. With the same artist¿s eye of those who photographed him, Hulse creates both a beautiful picture and something much, much deeper. 'Incidentally, this book is also damned entertaining I read it in two sittings and found myself laughing and tearing up on more than one occasion.'

Poorly written, please tell me the author wrote this with out any literary help. It's about a guy who is not famous, has done nothing and talks about the vigor¿s of male modeling as if he were a celebrity, which you can tell he is dying to be. Does anyone outside your circle really care ? The sales will tell you NO... The author writes about him learning the art of ¿Story Telling¿ with a fellow lifeguard during the summers in a quaint coastal town in New Jersey called Avalon. Obviously he must be referring to ¿Lying¿ and not the art of Story Telling¿ since this book is a bit distorted from many facts that have been stated. Example: Dr. X 'the character the author is really in love with' did not start a surf contest as a charity for a boy in town with cancer. Rather it was started by Dr. X¿s best friend for over 35 years and it started out as a contest that promoted ¿Clean Ocean Awareness¿ in the mid 1980¿s by a couple that have a summer home in Avalon, NJ. The book just never leads you any where, it is more like random thoughts, true or just how the author wants to remember them listed in front of you. The photos are nice but even there it¿s like watching a bad commercial from 20 years ago over and over again.

Bruce Hulse does an amazing job with his book, Sex, Love, and Fashion, and I found it thoroughly entertaining. It gives an open and honest account of Hulse's experience in the male modelling industry. The reader also learns about Hulse's strong family connections, his spirituality and some of his meaningful friendships (male & female). I loved it!

This is pretty much 'Confessions of a Video Vixen' for men. Like Karrine Stephans, Mr. Hulse writes about the 'lessons' he's learned from his wild, glamourous lifestyle...but not without titulating the reader first about all of the beautiful models he's slept with, in detail. As with Ms. Stephans book, readers will forget about Hulse's supposed redemption quickly, and only be interested in 'how much sex, and with who?' This a perfect case of being careful about who you sleep with. Hulse's past lovers must be squirming. If he has any daughters, I sure hope that they never experience an old lover kissing and telling the way their dear dad did.

I heard the author promoting this book on 'Covino and Rich.' That being a radio show on 'Maxim Radio Sirius 108.' I loved this book because it rolled perfectly. It has a little bit of everything. The struggle to break into the industry, getting that big break, living the life. Look this book is about a guy that truly lived the Maxim/Playboy lifestyle. If your into the James Bond books, well then this book will have you riveted! The book has many great fascinating directions. It reminds me alot of Sammy the Bull Gravano's book underboss. In Underboss you kept asking what's next...here you keep asking who's next! You originally read it for all the dirty interesting secrets, but then you get into all the other action that is happening! This book was the first book in years I just could not put down! I went to bed so tired cause I wanted to keep reading. I strongly reccommend this book if you are attracted to entertainment industry. It was without a doubt my favorite read in years!
