Overview

"The trafficking of women and girls for the purpose of prostitution is big business. It is one of the most lucrative industries in the world, particularly given the explosion of the sex industry since the 1990s. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the devastating impact of neoliberal economic policies in many parts of the world have resulted in significant numbers of women seeking income however they can." This book draws on a wealth of new empirical data: case studies from several countries of origin, transit and destination; research produced by NGOs, police and criminal courts; interviews and field research with the women themselves. Monzini's primary aim is to identify the mechanisms of what has truly become a global market. Most important, she assesses recent attempts to control trafficking, and strategies for resistance and change.
