Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Joyce Yen
For those who are victims of child sexual abuse and those trying to help someone handle the emotional trauma of child sexual abuse, this title offers an overview of the many issues and topics related to the subject, dispelling some of the myths and providing readers with a good foundation. The authors cover topics such as fondling, exposure to pornography, and rape, and include short examples of the trauma and confusion children experience as a result of sexual abuse. This book also explores the difficulties of exposing the abuse and helping people talk about their experiences. Some victims of sexual abuse give readers a glimpse of their experiences. Hyde and Forsyth include a chapter on where to get help for yourself or someone else, with organization names, addresses, and hotline numbers. There also are good source notes and a further reading list. For readers who are not familiar with the topic's vocabulary, a glossary is included. The target audience for this book is not very well defined, so it should be taken as a good first resource appropriate for anyone interested in getting a solid but short introduction to child and adolescent sexual abuse. Glossary. Index. Source Notes. Further Reading. VOYA Codes: 4Q 2P M J S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, For the YA with a special interest in the subject, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8, Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9 and Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).

Gr 7-UpA broad, objective, and competently written book. Unlike previous writings about this subject, this title discusses concerns about minors' access to the Internet and explains the phenomenon of repressed memories. A thorough history of sexual abuse, the characteristics and treatment of abusers, and a discussion about the effects of abuse on victims are also included. Myth/fact boxes that highlight and correct common misconceptions appear throughout the text. Information on how to avoid being victimized and what to do if you or someone you know is dealing with sexual abuse is provided, as are lists of helpful organizations and hotlines. Both students doing reports and victims of abuse will find this book to be highly readable, comprehensive, and useful.Melissa Gross, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA
Kirkus Reviews
Once again, Hyde and Forsyth (Know About Gays and Lesbians, 1994, etc.) take on an issue of great concern, and distill it into a thorough, understandable, impartial discussion. Every aspect of sexual abuse of the young is covered and demythologized, from such ancient practices as permitting intercourse with female babies in biblical times to the recent controversy regarding child pornography on the Internet. Statistics reinforce the authors' points as they define and consider sexual abuse, abusers and "abusees," legal issues, so-called false memories, women and children as abusers, prevention, and help for those who have been abused. A useful list of agencies and extensive notes make this an important resource for students as well as for general readers.
