Overview

Sexual behavior is one of the most complex types of human activity. Human sexuality is so varied -- and influenced by so many social attitudes -- that it seems impossible to define what is "normal." What, then, does the term sexual disorder mean?

To psychiatrists, a sexual disorder is a pattern of sexual desire or behavior that creates substantial distress or harms the person's ability to function in daily life. The cause may be physical, psychological, or both. At any given time, experts estimate, more than a third of Americans are suffering from a sexual disorder.

Some sexual disorders last throughout life. Some, such as pedophilia, can be dangerous to society. Yet many sexual disorders are neither long-lasting nor threatening to others.

This volume discusses the different types of sexual disorders and their effects on society at large. Most important, the book describes effective treatments that can help people overcome their sexual problems.

The Encyclopedia of Psychological Disorders, written specifically for young adults, provides up-to-date information on the history of, causes and effects of, and treatment and therapies for problems affecting the human mind. The series has been developed in association with the American Psychiatric Press, and each book, focusing on a specific disorder, includes the American Psychiatric Association's diagnostic criteria for that disorder, as well as a glossary of key terms and an appendix with information on organizations and agencies that help people who are diagnosed with that problem. The Encyclopedia of Psychological Disorders will help young adults to better understand mind-affecting disorders.
