Overview

In the 2nd edition of Sexual Harassment, compelling cases of sexual harassment in the 1990s are examined, including the highly publicized lawsuit against President Bill Clinton brought by Paula Jones, a former employee of the state of Arkansas. Conversely, readers are asked to assess a recent national debate over whether grade school children should be disciplined for "sexual harassment" when they kiss a playmate.

Sexual Harassment contains an overview, a detailed chronology, biographical sketches, primary source material, lists of print and nonprint resources, and a directory of organizations and agencies.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This latest addition to ABC-CLIO's ``Contemporary World Issues'' series follows its standard format of a chronology, brief biographical sketches, facts and statistics, a directory of organizations, and an annotated bibliography of print and nonprint sources. Summaries of case law and the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas hearings will be appreciated by nonspecialists. Eisaguirre's attempt to produce an objective and balanced work will likely irritate those readers who will question the inclusion of antifeminist materials and the decision to devote twice as much space to Camille Paglia's Sexual Personae (Yale Univ. Pr., 1990) and Warren Farrell's The Myth of Male Power ( LJ 8/93) as Susan Faludi's Backlash ( LJ 9/15/91). Recommended for libraries seeking a noncontroversial sourcebook on a controversial topic.-- Melody Burton, Univ. of Windsor Lib., Ontario
School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-Eisaguirre's goal is to present all the facts and the diverse perspectives-feminist, legal, managerial, and male-that will enable students, researchers, and activists to think clearly about the subject. Legal aspects are stressed, and a brief, useful guide to case and statute research is included. A chronology stretching from Genesis to the Senator Packwood episode reflects the burgeoning importance of sexual-harassment issues at work and at school-more than half of the events and cases date from 1980 forward. Biographical sketches cover those whose careers have focused on the issue (although some with incidental involvement-Phyllis Schlafly, Catharine MacKinnon-are included because otherwise their views would be unrepresented). The ``Facts and Statistics'' chapter provides an overview of federal regulations and information on state statutes that includes time and eligibility limits and rules for administrative procedures and private lawsuits. Here, as elsewhere, readers are warned of the changing nature of that law, and are encouraged to seek updated information. Other sections summarize important cases and reproduce private and government-sponsored statistical studies on the perception, incidence, and cost of harassment. A directory lists more than 50 organizations-professional, government, and nonprofit-and nonprint resources. This clearly presented, evenhanded treatment combines the scholarly excellence of a law text with the accessibility of a lay guide; it will be indispensable to high school students both for its factual content and its suggestions for further research.-Kathleen Cotter, Brooklyn Public Library, NY
Booknews
A resource and guide to further research in sexual harassment. After an overview on harassment in the military, government, schools, and business, chapters provide a detailed chronology, biographical sketches, facts and statistics on legislation and incidence, and a directory of organizations. Includes some 65 pages of selected print and nonprint resources, all with detailed descriptions, and a glossary. This second edition reflects new developments since 1993, and includes an expanded chronology, new and updated biographical sketches and court cases, and expanded material on law in schools and colleges. For students, legislators, advocacy groups, and journalists. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
