School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-- Comparing today's world to a war zone, Nourse describes symptoms, treatment, and prevention of a gamut of : sexually transmitted diseases. In addition to self-esteem as the basis for defensive living, he recommends avoidance of drugs and intravenous drug users; monogamy; protection with condoms and spermacides at all times; or abstaining from sex altogether. The straightforward text is factual, nonjudgmental, and persuasive. Content is similar to Elaine Landau's Sexually Transmitted Diseases (Enslow, 1986). Other good sources on individual diseases are available, such as Alvin and Virginia Silversteins' extensively revised AIDS (Enslow, 1991) and the very frank Lynda Madaras Talks to Teens about AIDS (Newmarket, 1988). Nourse's title should be considered for purchase because of its clarity and comprehensiveness. A possible drawback is the lack of a list of places to go for help, but Nourse does emphasize the importance of seeking medical advice and the need for young adults to take their concerns to parents and professional counselors. --Sue A.
