Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band [Original Motion Picture Sound Track]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Like the album itself, the soundtrack to the 1978 film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is a legend in its own right. Where the Beatles' album was a groundbreaking moment in pop music, the Robert Stigwood film was an unmitigated disaster when first released. Nevertheless, as the years passed and '70s nostalgia grew, certain kitsch fanatics revealed an affection for the debacle, so it's no surprise that the album was reissued on CD for its 20th anniversary.

    Oldie But Goodie!

I grew up in the early 70's and loved this movie the first time I saw it and I still love it. The soundtrack is great! Sure, some of it's a bit cheesey now that "I'm all grown up" but I still enjoy listening to the songs and watching the movie. For me it's a flashback to the past when everything was simple and non-complicated!

Great classic hits done by professionals

The Movie itself was horrible. However, the Soundtrack is a gem. If you like any Beatles stuff then you will love this. The Bee Gees do a fantastic job as well as Peter Frampton. Where else can you hear Alice cooper and the Bee Gees sing together? Better yet even Steve Martin takes a crack at singing. If you like any 70's stuff then this is the Album for you.

    GREAT ALBUM!!

I LOVE this album! Sure it's a campy remade version, but it's lots of fun, and great for BeeGees & Frampton fans.

Bang! Bang! Stigwood's Money Maker Made Sure That They Were Dead!

My condolances to Maurice Gibb, who passed away this year. Also, I felt sorry for George Martin being dragged into this mess as well as Peter Frampton, ace guitarist (whose career fizzled after this lackluster movie). The Bee Gees were heavily inspired by the Beatles in their earlier days (witness "To Love Somebody", "Lonely Days Lonely Nights" and "1941 NY Mining Disaster" but you can't tell it on this muzakal production (did you notice the hits disappeared for them, too?). "Golden Slumbers/Carry that Weight," "Oh! Darling" and "A Day in the Life" sound blasphemous! Aerosmith, whose version of "Come Together" was among the more tolerable of this mess, would also have less success for a few years. Not much was heard of Earth, Wind and Fire (one of the better selections with their spirited cover of "Got to Get You Into My Life") after this movie or Billy Preston (another more tolerable moment). George Burns and Steve Martin are both funny men but how many of us wish to sit down and listen to them perform the Beatles' songs? The versions of "When I'm 64," "Strawberry Fields Forever" (oh the shame!) and "Here Comes the Sun" fare worse. I suppose Robert Stigwood would have invited Vanilla Ice in on this if he were infamous in the 1970's. Friends don't let friends listen to or watch such garbage.
